Penguins of Madagascar</strong> </em>is a spin-off from the <em><strong>Madagascar</strong> </em>franchise that’s meant to focus on the comic relief characters from that series. Namely (as one can guess) the unflappable penguins who often show great mechanical skills and Achilles heels. So DreamWorks is taking a chance turning that side dish into a movie, but it does mean one thing: They can cut a pretty entertaining trailer.</p> <p><span id="more-187509"></span></p> <p>Though this doesn’t feature as many names as most modern animated movies, it does offer <a title="More About Benedict Cumberbatch" href="http://web.archive.org/web/20140625045849/http://screencrave.com/tag/Benedict-Cumberbatch/">Benedict Cumberbatch</a> as Classified, the head of a secret organization of animals who look after animals who can’t look after themselves. Also in the cast are <a title="More About Ken Jeong" href="http://web.archive.org/web/20140625045849/http://screencrave.com/tag/Ken-Jeong/">Ken Jeong</a>, <a title="More About John Malkovich" href="http://web.archive.org/web/20140625045849/http://screencrave.com/tag/John-Malkovich/">John Malkovich</a> and <a title="More About Peter Stormare" href="http://web.archive.org/web/20140625045849/http://screencrave.com/tag/Peter-Stormare/">Peter Stormare</a>, so there’s not as many ringers as you’d expect. Here’s that trailer:</p> <p><iframe width="500" height="281" src="http://web.archive.org/web/20140625045849if_/http://www.youtube.com/embed/N-SElhktQF0?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></p> <p>First up, it must be noted that DreamWorks Animation has a penchant for choosing songs that seem a little inappropriate for the material (N.E.R.D.’s “Lapdance” may be pretty catchy, but it’s the definition of NSFW), or as a reference meant for parents (like using Kenny Loggins’ “Danger Zone”). You can see that the characters — who seem pretty one dimensional in their previous appearances — are acting as they normally do, so it will be interesting to see how they approach this narrative. Will we get the penguins’ backstory?
