The artist who created this piece is Tom Killion, and its creation came to be in 2002. The piece is a wood stamp press, these presses are hand carved into wood and linoleum blocks. Each variety of color that is present in the piece, a new block has to be created to ensure that the color doesn’t blend in ways the artist would not want it too. In the framed final piece, the stamp is separated into two different frames to gives focus to the the, Monterey Bay and then Santa Cruz. In this piece, Killion uses this chance to portray Santa Cruz in a landscape narrative, he uses depth to enable the landscape. The piece’s foreground is the mountain in Pogonip, a hiking area in the northern part of Santa Cruz County; then it starts spreading out to a horizontal view of the ocean, and at the bottom of the mountain, Santa Cruz is located. In the depiction of the town you see the shadows of the Big Dipper, an amusement park attraction and the historic Holy Cross Catholic Church.</p></div><div class="columns large-1-5 position-relative show-for-large card-grade-essay-words-col"><ul><li>523 Words</li><li>3 Pages</li></ul></div><div class="columns large-2 show-for-large position-relative card-grade-essay-grade-col grade-decent-essays"><div><span>Decent Essays</span></div></div><div class="small-12 medium-12 large-1-5 position-relative card-grade-essay-button-col"><a class="button text-m " href="/essay/Tom-Killions-Monterey-Bay-From-Santa-Cruz-53B4333C361BD93F">Read More</a></div></div></li><li id="related-essay2"><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 large-12 card box-shadow card-grade-essay paper no-padding"><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 hide-for-large position-relative card-grade-essay-grade-col grade-decent-essays"><div><span>Decent Essays</span></div></div><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 position-relative hide-for-large card-grade-essay-words-col padding-left-1-imp"><a href="/essay/Elizabeth-Gowers-Art-Analysis-5F80701C4105995E" class="hide-for-large"><h2 class="heading-s weight-700 brand-secondary">Elizabeth Gower&#x27;s Art Analysis</h2></a><ul><li>691 Words</li><li>3 Pages</li></ul></div><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 large-8 position-relative"><div class="card-grade-essay-preview-col show-for-large"><a href="/essay/Elizabeth-Gowers-Art-Analysis-5F80701C4105995E" class="show-for-large"><h2 class="heading-s weight-700 brand-secondary">Elizabeth Gower&#x27;s Art Analysis</h2></a></div><p class="text-m break-word word-break text-ellipsis-after text-ellipsis-after">On viewing her work, I am reminded of the traditional art of quilt making, an art once dismissed as “women’s work” but reevaluated by the Pattern and Decoration movement during the second wave of feminism during the 1970’s. He describes the High culture being traditional, where art is intentional and used to portray the artist’s inner emotions (9-10). In high culture art, the audience gets a direct message from the artist through his work, there is no subjectivity towards the individual. The next rung in the declining ladder is that of Folk art. Macdonald classifies Folk art to be like High culture art; however, only for the poor and the secluded, its voice coming from people without power yet its purpose specific towards a singular message (11). The South &#x27;s reliance on cotton creation attached it monetarily to the manor framework and racially to white amazingness. The social culture and political mastery of the moderately little manor gentry disguised subjection &#x27;s extraordinary social and financial expenses for whites and also blacks. Most slaves were held by a couple of substantial grower. At the same time most slave-owners had few slaves, and most southern whites had no slaves whatsoever. All things considered, aside from a couple of mountain whites, the majority of southern whites firmly upheld subjection and racial amazingness on the grounds that they esteemed the trust of getting to be slave-owners themselves, and in light of the fact that white racial character provided for them a feeling of prevalence over the blacks. The treatment of the monetarily profitable slaves fluctuated extensively. Inside the limits of the brutal framework, slaves longed for opportunity and attempted to keep up their mankind, including family life. The more established dark colonization development was generally supplanted in the 1830s by a radical Garrisoning abolitionism requesting a prompt end to bondage.</p></div><div class="columns large-1-5 position-relative show-for-large card-grade-essay-words-col"><ul><li>1559 Words</li><li>7 Pages</li></ul></div><div class="columns large-2 show-for-large position-relative card-grade-essay-grade-col grade-better-essays"><div><span>Better Essays</span></div></div><div class="small-12 medium-12 large-1-5 position-relative card-grade-essay-button-col"><a class="button text-m " href="/essay/Questions-On-The-s-Cotton-Gin-Made-F3MZR49JF9L5">Read More</a></div></div></li><li id="related-essay7"><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 large-12 card box-shadow card-grade-essay paper no-padding"><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 hide-for-large position-relative card-grade-essay-grade-col grade-decent-essays"><div><span>Decent Essays</span></div></div><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 position-relative hide-for-large card-grade-essay-words-col padding-left-1-imp"><a href="/essay/Kara-Walker-Vs-Thomas-DB03CDC4DB3862BE" class="hide-for-large"><h2 class="heading-s weight-700 brand-secondary">Kara Walker Vs Thomas</h2></a><ul><li>665 Words</li><li>3 Pages</li></ul></div><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 large-8 position-relative"><div class="card-grade-essay-preview-col show-for-large"><a href="/essay/Kara-Walker-Vs-Thomas-DB03CDC4DB3862BE" class="show-for-large"><h2 class="heading-s weight-700 brand-secondary">Kara Walker Vs Thomas</h2></a></div><p class="text-m break-word word-break text-ellipsis-after text-ellipsis-after">Since its founding, the Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA) has been exhibiting and collecting works by contemporary artists. They have an ever-expanding collection of 20th- and 21st-century art that I had the pleasure of viewing, following its remodel in 2012. In addition to the permanent collection, a new innovative experience called the Black Box gallery introduces a new way of viewing the works of contemporary artists. The Black Box allows the viewer not only to see the work in a new way, playing with light but also hear and experience images in motion. The exhibit I went to see was curated by Kristen Hileman, the senior curator of contemporary art, and it features two screen-based works as opposed to displaying one as it usually does. The two artists featured were Kara Walker and Hank Willis Thomas.Within their works, both artists discuss the feeling and experiences associated with being black in America, specifically the historical significance of the legacy of slavery.</p></div><div class="columns large-1-5 position-relative show-for-large card-grade-essay-words-col"><ul><li>665 Words</li><li>3 Pages</li></ul></div><div class="columns large-2 show-for-large position-relative card-grade-essay-grade-col grade-decent-essays"><div><span>Decent Essays</span></div></div><div class="small-12 medium-12 large-1-5 position-relative card-grade-essay-button-col"><a class="button text-m " href="/essay/Kara-Walker-Vs-Thomas-DB03CDC4DB3862BE">Read More</a></div></div></li><li id="related-essay8"><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 large-12 card box-shadow card-grade-essay paper no-padding"><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 hide-for-large position-relative card-grade-essay-grade-col grade-decent-essays"><div><span>Decent Essays</span></div></div><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 position-relative hide-for-large card-grade-essay-words-col padding-left-1-imp"><a href="/essay/Symbolism-In-The-Century-Quilt-By-Marilyn-PZ3ZN6RGJQR" class="hide-for-large"><h2 class="heading-s weight-700 brand-secondary">Symbolism In The Century Quilt By Marilyn Nelson Waniek</h2></a><ul><li>1231 Words</li><li>5 Pages</li></ul></div><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 large-8 position-relative"><div class="card-grade-essay-preview-col show-for-large"><a href="/essay/Symbolism-In-The-Century-Quilt-By-Marilyn-PZ3ZN6RGJQR" class="show-for-large"><h2 class="heading-s weight-700 brand-secondary">Symbolism In The Century Quilt By Marilyn Nelson Waniek</h2></a></div><p class="text-m break-word word-break text-ellipsis-after text-ellipsis-after">physically and mentally, quilting has acted as an art that transcends racial barriers and to bring</p></div><div class="columns large-1-5 position-relative show-for-large card-grade-essay-words-col"><ul><li>1231 Words</li><li>5 Pages</li></ul></div><div class="columns large-2 show-for-large position-relative card-grade-essay-grade-col grade-decent-essays"><div><span>Decent Essays</span></div></div><div class="small-12 medium-12 large-1-5 position-relative card-grade-essay-button-col"><a class="button text-m " href="/essay/Symbolism-In-The-Century-Quilt-By-Marilyn-PZ3ZN6RGJQR">Read More</a></div></div></li><li id="related-essay9"><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 large-12 card box-shadow card-grade-essay paper no-padding"><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 hide-for-large position-relative card-grade-essay-grade-col grade-decent-essays"><div><span>Decent Essays</span></div></div><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 position-relative hide-for-large card-grade-essay-words-col padding-left-1-imp"><a href="/essay/Bowers-Museum-Experience-PCRCA8F5LXT" class="hide-for-large"><h2 class="heading-s weight-700 brand-secondary">Bowers Museum Experience</h2></a><ul><li>629 Words</li><li>3 Pages</li></ul></div><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 large-8 position-relative"><div class="card-grade-essay-preview-col show-for-large"><a href="/essay/Bowers-Museum-Experience-PCRCA8F5LXT" class="show-for-large"><h2 class="heading-s weight-700 brand-secondary">Bowers Museum Experience</h2></a></div><p class="text-m break-word word-break text-ellipsis-after text-ellipsis-after">On Saturday, January 23rd, 2016, I visited the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana, California. I observed several exhibitions on display, and I ultimately decided to write my report on Fannie Eliza Duvall’s Confirmation Class. Confirmation Class is an oil painting on canvas, and measures 20 by 30 inches. The painting with origins in Los Angeles, California, was produced in 1897, and was one of the first paintings done by a local artist to adopt new theories of Impressionism through California themes. What attracted me to this painting was the selection of the warm color scheme used to create a relaxing and pleasant drawing to look at as opposed to the larger selection of abstract and non-representational art on display at the Bowers Museum. Another reason as to why I chose to write my report on this specific drawing was the fact that this drawing was from a small bunch produced in my home state of California on display.</p></div><div class="columns large-1-5 position-relative show-for-large card-grade-essay-words-col"><ul><li>629 Words</li><li>3 Pages</li></ul></div><div class="columns large-2 show-for-large position-relative card-grade-essay-grade-col grade-decent-essays"><div><span>Decent Essays</span></div></div><div class="small-12 medium-12 large-1-5 position-relative card-grade-essay-button-col"><a class="button text-m " href="/essay/Bowers-Museum-Experience-PCRCA8F5LXT">Read More</a></div></div></li><li id="related-essay10"><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 large-12 card box-shadow card-grade-essay paper no-padding"><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 hide-for-large position-relative card-grade-essay-grade-col grade-decent-essays"><div><span>Decent Essays</span></div></div><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 position-relative hide-for-large card-grade-essay-words-col padding-left-1-imp"><a href="/essay/Stereotypes-In-Black-History-FCRFK2TWM" class="hide-for-large"><h2 class="heading-s weight-700 brand-secondary">Stereotypes In Black History</h2></a><ul><li>71 Words</li><li>1 Pages</li></ul></div><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 large-8 position-relative"><div class="card-grade-essay-preview-col show-for-large"><a href="/essay/Stereotypes-In-Black-History-FCRFK2TWM" class="show-for-large"><h2 class="heading-s weight-700 brand-secondary">Stereotypes In Black History</h2></a></div><p class="text-m break-word word-break text-ellipsis-after text-ellipsis-after">Florida’s rich history often spotlights two distinctive groups; the plentiful Hispanic population, or the conventional Caucasian syndicate. Johnson began exploring his level of creativity as a child, and it only amplified from there because he discovered that he wanted to be an artist. After making this discovery he attended the National Academy of Design in New York which is where he met his mentor Charles Webster Hawthorne who had a strong influential impact on Johnson. Once Johnson graduated he moved to Paris where he was exposed to different artists, various artistic abilities, and evolutionary creations. Throughout Johnson’s time in Paris he grew as an artist, and adapted a “folk” style where he used lively colors and flat figures. Johnson used the “folk” style to express the experience of most African-Americans during the years of the 1930s and 1940s.</p></div><div class="columns large-1-5 position-relative show-for-large card-grade-essay-words-col"><ul><li>1242 Words</li><li>5 Pages</li></ul></div><div class="columns large-2 show-for-large position-relative card-grade-essay-grade-col grade-decent-essays"><div><span>Decent Essays</span></div></div><div class="small-12 medium-12 large-1-5 position-relative card-grade-essay-button-col"><a class="button text-m " href="/essay/William-H-Johnson-s-Life-PKN2T49NLBQQ">Read More</a></div></div></li><li id="related-essay12"><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 large-12 card box-shadow card-grade-essay paper no-padding"><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 hide-for-large position-relative card-grade-essay-grade-col grade-good-essays"><div><span>Good Essays</span></div></div><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 position-relative hide-for-large card-grade-essay-words-col padding-left-1-imp"><a href="/essay/An-Analysis-of-Andy-Warhols-Gold-Marilyn-F3RHANKTC" class="hide-for-large"><h2 class="heading-s weight-700 brand-secondary">An Analysis of Andy Warhol&#x27;s Gold Marilyn Monroe (1962) Essay</h2></a><ul><li>966 Words</li><li>4 Pages</li></ul></div><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 large-8 position-relative"><div class="card-grade-essay-preview-col show-for-large"><a href="/essay/An-Analysis-of-Andy-Warhols-Gold-Marilyn-F3RHANKTC" class="show-for-large"><h2 class="heading-s weight-700 brand-secondary">An Analysis of Andy Warhol&#x27;s Gold Marilyn Monroe (1962) Essay</h2></a></div><p class="text-m break-word word-break text-ellipsis-after text-ellipsis-after">This piece was created during a time of political and social change.
