With a bias towards excellent New Zealand producers, our beverage list rivals other Wellington restaurants. </p> <h5><strong>History of Bellamy’s</strong></h5> <p>Bellamy’s has been a fixture of New Zealand Parliament for nearly 200 years.</p> <p>The first bill passed by New Zealand was known as the ‘Bellamy’s Bill”—the Licensing Amendment Act which allowed alcohol to be sold within Parliament. This meant Parliament could set up an on-site restaurant and serve liquor. It was named after the founder of the British House of Commons’ equivalent restaurant, John Bellamy.</p> <p>In its early days, Bellamy’s was renowned for having the best alcohol in the country, and even sold an exclusive brand of liquor just for parliamentarians. While there were many critics of the restaurant (including some MPs and the Temperance movement) Bellamy’s remained and moved to Wellington with the rest of Parliament in 1865.</p> <p>In Wellington, Bellamy’s was housed in the original Parliament building until it was destroyed by fire in 1907. Bellamys and Parliament were temporarily located in the old Government House on (Molesworth St) while a new Parliament House was built. The House must sit about 90 days in the year, which are divided into blocks of two-three weeks.</p> <p>In a sitting week, all MPs travel to Parliament in Wellington so they can participate in Select Committees and sitting of the House of the Representatives (during which they will take part in Question Time, General Debates, and debate legislation). In a sitting week, the House of Representatives sits on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.</p> <p> A week when the House of Representatives is not sitting is called a non-sitting week.</p> <h5><strong>Dining at Copperfield’s</strong></h5> <p>As Copperfield’s is located within the Beehive, visitors will need to go through Security screening to visit the café.</p> <p>All belongings, including bags, mobile phones, and hats will be stored in our secure cloakroom during your visit.
