and <i>He added,</i> “Do not wear<MG1746a> two<MG1417> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>tunics<MG5509>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>And He said<MG3004> to them, “Wherever<MG3699, 1437> you enter<MG1525> a house<MG3614>, stay<MG3306> there<MG1563> until<MG2193> you <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>leave<MG1831> town<MG1564>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Any<MG3739> place<MG5117> that does not receive<MG1209> you or<MG3366> listen<MG191> to you, as you go<MG1607> out<MG1607> from<MG1564> there<MG1564>, shake<MG1621> the dust<MG5529b> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>off<MG1621> the soles<MG5270> of your feet<MG4228> as a testimony<MG3142> against them.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And they went<MG1831> out<MG1831> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>preached<MG2784> that <i>people</i> are to repent<MG3340>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>And they were casting<MG1544b> out<MG1544b> many<MG4183> demons<MG1140> and were anointing<MG218> with oil<MG1637> many<MG4183> sick<MG732> people<MG732> and healing<MG2323> them. <p class="hdg">John’s Fate Recalled</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>And King<MG935> Herod<MG2264> heard<MG191> <i>about it,</i> for His name<MG3686> had become<MG1096> well<MG5318> known<MG5318>; and <i>people</i> were saying<MG3004>, “John<MG2491> the Baptist<MG907> has risen<MG1453> from the dead<MG3498>, and that is why<MG1223> these<MG3588> miraculous<MG1411> powers<MG1411> are at work<MG1754> in Him.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>But others<MG243> were saying<MG3004>, “He is Elijah<MG2243>.” And others<MG243> were saying<MG3004>, “<i>He is</i> a prophet<MG4396>, like<MG5613> one<MG1520> of the prophets<MG4396> <i>of old.</i>” <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>But when Herod<MG2264> heard<MG191> <i>about it,</i> he kept saying<MG3004>, “John<MG2491>, whom<MG3739> I beheaded<MG607>, has risen<MG1453>!” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>For Herod<MG2264> himself<MG846> had sent<MG649> <i>men</i> and had John<MG2491> arrested<MG2902> and bound<MG1210> in prison<MG5438> on account<MG1223> of Herodias<MG2266>, the wife<MG1135> of his brother<MG80> Philip<MG5376>, because<MG3754> he had married<MG1060> her. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>For John<MG2491> had been saying<MG3004> to Herod<MG2264>, “It is not lawful<MG1832> for you to have<MG2192> your brother’s<MG80> wife<MG1135>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>And Herodias<MG2266> held<MG1758> a<MG1758> grudge<MG1758> against<MG1758> him and wanted<MG2309> to put<MG615> him to<MG615> death<MG615>, and could<MG1410> not <i>do so;</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>for Herod<MG2264> was<MG5399> afraid<MG5399> of John<MG2491>, knowing<MG3609a> that he was a righteous<MG1342> and holy<MG40> man<MG435>, and he had been protecting<MG4933> him. And when he heard<MG191> him, he was very<MG4183> perplexed<MG639>; and <i>yet</i> he <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>used to enjoy<MG2234> listening<MG191> to him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>An opportune<MG2121> day<MG2250> came<MG1096> when<MG3753> Herod<MG2264>, on his birthday<MG1077>, held<MG4160> a banquet<MG1173> for his nobles<MG3175> and military<MG5506> commanders<MG5506>, and the leading<MG4413> people<MG4413> of Galilee<MG1056>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>and when the daughter<MG2364> of Herodias<MG2266> herself<MG846> came<MG1525> in<MG1525> and danced<MG3738>, she pleased<MG700> Herod<MG2264> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>his dinner<MG4873> guests<MG4873>; and the king<MG935> said<MG3004> to the girl<MG2877>, “Ask<MG154> me for whatever<MG3739, 1437> you want<MG2309>, and I will give<MG1325> it to you.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>And he swore<MG3660> to her, “Whatever<MG3739, 1437> you ask<MG154> of me, I will give<MG1325> <i>it</i> to you, up to half<MG2255> of my kingdom<MG932>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>And she went<MG1831> out<MG1831> and said<MG3004> to her mother<MG3384>, “What<MG5101> shall I ask<MG154> for?” And she said<MG3004>, “The head<MG2776> of John<MG2491> the Baptist<MG907>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>Immediately<MG2117> she came<MG1525> in<MG1525> a hurry<MG4710> to the king<MG935> and asked<MG154>, saying<MG3004>, “I want<MG2309> you to give<MG1325> me at once<MG1824> the head<MG2776> of John<MG2491> the Baptist<MG910> on a platter<MG4094>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>And although the king<MG935> was very<MG4036> sorry<MG4036>, because<MG1223> of his oaths<MG3727> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>his dinner<MG345> guests<MG345>, he was unwilling<MG3756, 2309> to refuse<MG114> her. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>Immediately<MG2117> the king<MG935> sent<MG649> an executioner<MG4688> and commanded<MG2004> <i>him</i> to bring<MG5342> <i>back</i> his head<MG2776>. And he went<MG565> and beheaded<MG607> him in the prison<MG5438>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>and brought<MG5342> his head<MG2776> on a platter<MG4094>, and gave<MG1325> it to the girl<MG2877>; and the girl<MG2877> gave<MG1325> it to her mother<MG3384>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>When his disciples<MG3101> heard<MG191> <i>about this,</i> they came<MG2064> and carried<MG142> away<MG142> his body<MG4430>, and laid<MG5087> it in a tomb<MG3419>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>The apostles<MG652> *gathered<MG4863> together<MG4863> with Jesus<MG2424>; and they reported<MG518> to Him all<MG3956> that they had done<MG4160> and taught<MG1321>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>And He *said<MG3004> to them, “Come<MG1205> <i>away</i> by yourselves<MG4771, 846> to a secluded<MG2048> place<MG5117> and rest<MG373> a little<MG3641> while<MG3641>.” (For there were many<MG4183> <i>people</i> coming<MG2064> and going<MG5217>, and they did not even<MG3761> have<MG2119> time<MG2119> to eat<MG2068>.) <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>And they went<MG565> away<MG565> in the boat<MG4143> to a secluded<MG2048> place<MG5117> by themselves<MG2398>. <p class="hdg">Five Thousand Men Fed</p><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span><i>The people</i> saw<MG3708> them going<MG5217>, and many<MG4183> recognized<MG1921> <i>them</i> and ran<MG4936> there<MG1563> together<MG4936> on foot<MG3979a> from all<MG3956> the cities<MG4172>, and got<MG4281> there<MG4281> ahead<MG4281> of them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>When Jesus went<MG1831> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>ashore<MG1831>, He saw<MG3708> a large<MG4183> crowd<MG3793>, and He felt<MG4697> compassion<MG4697> for them because<MG3754> they were like<MG5613> sheep<MG4263b> without<MG3361, 2192> a shepherd<MG4166>; and He began<MG757> to teach<MG1321> them many<MG4183> things<MG4183>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>And when it was already<MG2235> late<MG4183, 5610>, His disciples<MG3101> came<MG4334> up<MG4334> to Him and said<MG3004>, “<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>This<MG3588> place<MG5117> is secluded<MG2048> and it is already<MG2235> late<MG5610, 4183>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>send<MG630> them away<MG630> so<MG2443> that<MG2443> they may go<MG565> into the surrounding<MG2945> countryside<MG68> and villages<MG2968> and buy<MG59> themselves<MG1438> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>something<MG5101> to eat<MG2068>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>But He answered<MG611> them, “You give<MG1325> them <i>something</i> to eat<MG2068>!” And they *said<MG3004> to Him, “Shall we go<MG565> and spend<MG59> two<MG1250> hundred<MG1250> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>denarii<MG1220> on bread<MG740>, and give<MG1325> <i>it</i> to them to eat<MG2068>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>But He *said<MG3004> to them, “How<MG4214> many<MG4214> loaves<MG740> do you have<MG2192>? Go<MG5217> look<MG3708>!” And when they found<MG1097> out<MG1097>, they *said<MG3004>, “Five<MG4002>, and two<MG1417> fish<MG2486>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>And He ordered<MG2004> them all<MG3956> to recline<MG347> by groups<MG4849> on the green<MG5515> grass<MG5528>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>They reclined<MG377> in groups<MG4237> of hundreds<MG1540> and fifties<MG4004>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span>And He took<MG2983> the five<MG4002> loaves<MG740> and the two<MG1417> fish<MG2486>, and looking<MG308> up<MG308> toward<MG1519> heaven<MG3772>, He blessed<MG2127> <i>the food</i> and broke<MG2622> the loaves<MG740> and He gave<MG1325> <i>them</i> to the disciples<MG3101> <i>again and again</i> to set<MG3908> before<MG3908> them; and He divided<MG3307> the two<MG1417> fish<MG2486> among them all<MG3956>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span>And they all<MG3956> ate<MG2068> and were satisfied<MG5526>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-43.htm"><b>43</b></a></span>and they picked<MG142> up<MG142> twelve<MG1427> full<MG4138> baskets<MG2894> of the broken<MG2801> pieces<MG2801> <i>of bread,</i> and of the fish<MG2486>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-44.htm"><b>44</b></a></span>There were five<MG4000> thousand<MG4000> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>men<MG435> who ate<MG2068> the loaves<MG740>. <p class="hdg">Jesus Walks on the Water</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-45.htm"><b>45</b></a></span>And immediately<MG2117> Jesus had<MG315> His disciples<MG3101> get<MG1684> into the boat<MG4143> and go<MG4254> ahead<MG4254> of <i>Him</i> to the other<MG4008> side<MG4008>, to Bethsaida<MG966>, while<MG2193> He Himself<MG846> *dismissed<MG630> the crowd<MG3793>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-46.htm"><b>46</b></a></span>And after saying<MG657> goodbye<MG657> to them, He left<MG565> for the mountain<MG3735> to pray<MG4336>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-47.htm"><b>47</b></a></span>When it was evening<MG3798>, the boat<MG4143> was in the middle<MG3319> of the sea<MG2281>, and He was alone<MG3441> on the land<MG1093>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-48.htm"><b>48</b></a></span>Seeing<MG3708> them <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[u]</a></span>straining<MG928> at the oars<MG1643>—for the wind<MG417> was against<MG1727> them—at about<MG4012> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[v]</a></span>fourth<MG5067a> watch<MG5438> of the night<MG3571>, He *came<MG2064> to them, walking<MG4043> on the sea<MG2281>; and He intended<MG2309> to pass<MG3928> by them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-49.htm"><b>49</b></a></span>But when they saw<MG3708> Him walking<MG4043> on the sea<MG2281>, they thought<MG1380> that it was a ghost<MG5326>, and they cried<MG349> out<MG349>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/6-50.htm"><b>50</b></a></span>for they all<MG3956> saw<MG3708> Him and were <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[w]</a></span>terrified<MG5015>.
