So the physicians<MH7495> embalmed<MH2590> Israel<MH3478>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/50-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>Now forty<MH705> days<MH3117> were <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>required<MH4390> for <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>it, for <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>such<MH3651> is the period<MH3117> required<MH4390> for embalming<MH2591b>. And the Egyptians<MH4714> wept<MH1058> for him seventy<MH7657> days<MH3117>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/50-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>When the days<MH3117> of <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>mourning<MH1068> for him were<MH5674a> past<MH5674a>, Joseph<MH3130> spoke<MH1696> to the household<MH1004> of Pharaoh<MH6547>, saying<MH559>, “If<MH518> now<MH4994> I have found<MH4672> favor<MH2580> in your sight<MH5869>, please<MH4994> speak<MH1696> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>to Pharaoh<MH6547>, saying<MH559>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/50-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>‘My father<MH1> made me swear<MH7650>, saying<MH559>, “Behold<MH2009>, I am about to die<MH4191>; in my grave<MH6913> which<MH834> I dug<MH3738a> for myself in the land<MH776> of Canaan<MH3667a>, there<MH8033> you shall bury<MH6912> me.” Now<MH6258> then, please<MH4994> let me go<MH5927> up<MH5927> and bury<MH6912> my father<MH1>; then I will return<MH7725>.’” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/50-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Pharaoh<MH6547> said<MH559>, “Go<MH5927> up<MH5927> and bury<MH6912> your father<MH1>, as he made you swear<MH7650>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/50-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>So Joseph<MH3130> went<MH5927> up<MH5927> to bury<MH6912> his father<MH1>, and with him went<MH5927> up<MH5927> all<MH3605> the servants<MH5650> of Pharaoh<MH6547>, the elders<MH2205> of his household<MH1004> and all<MH3605> the elders<MH2205> of the land<MH776> of Egypt<MH4714>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/50-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>and all<MH3605> the household<MH1004> of Joseph<MH3130> and his brothers<MH251> and his father’s<MH1> household<MH1004>; they left<MH5800a> only<MH7534b> their little<MH2945> ones<MH2945> and their flocks<MH6629> and their herds<MH1241> in the land<MH776> of Goshen<MH1657>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/50-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Chariots<MH7393> with teams<MH6571b> of<MH6571b> horses<MH6571b> also went<MH5927> up<MH5927> with him; and it was a very<MH3966> great<MH3515> company<MH4264>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/50-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>When they came<MH935> to the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>threshing<MH1637> floor<MH1637> of Atad<MH329>, which<MH834> is beyond<MH5676> the Jordan<MH3383>, they mourned<MH5594> there<MH8033> with a very<MH3966> great<MH1419> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>sorrowful<MH3515> lamentation<MH4553>; and he <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>observed<MH6213a> seven<MH7651> days<MH3117> of mourning<MH60> for his father<MH1>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/50-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Now when the inhabitants<MH3427> of the land<MH776>, the Canaanites<MH3669a>, saw<MH7200> the mourning<MH60> at <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>the threshing<MH1637> floor<MH1637> of Atad<MH329>, they said<MH559>, “This<MH2088> is a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>grievous<MH3515> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>mourning<MH60> for the Egyptians<MH4714>.” Therefore<MH5921, 3651> it was named<MH7121, 8034> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>Abel-mizraim<MH67>, which<MH834> is beyond<MH5676> the Jordan<MH3383>. <p class="hdg">Burial at Machpelah</p><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/50-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And <i>so</i> his sons<MH1121> did<MH6213a> for him as he had commanded<MH6680> them; <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/50-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>for his sons<MH1121> carried<MH5375> him to the land<MH776> of Canaan<MH3667a> and buried<MH6912> him in the cave<MH4631> of the field<MH7704> of Machpelah<MH4375> opposite<MH5921, 6440> Mamre<MH4471>, which<MH834> Abraham<MH85> had bought<MH7069> along with the field<MH7704> as a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>burial<MH6913> site<MH272> from Ephron<MH6085> the Hittite<MH2850>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/50-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>And after<MH310> he had buried<MH6912> his father<MH1>, Joseph<MH3130> returned<MH7725> to Egypt<MH4714>, he and his brothers<MH251>, and all<MH3605> who had gone<MH5927> up<MH5927> with him to bury<MH6912> his father<MH1>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/50-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>When Joseph’s<MH3130> brothers<MH251> had seen<MH7200> that their father<MH1> was dead<MH4191>, they said<MH559>, “What if Joseph<MH3130> holds<MH7852> a<MH7852> grudge<MH7852> against<MH7852> us and pays<MH7725> us back<MH7725> in<MH7725> full<MH7725> for all<MH3605> the wrong<MH7463a> which<MH834> we did<MH1580> to him!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/50-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>So they sent<MH6680> instructions<MH6680> to Joseph<MH3130>, saying<MH559>, “Your father<MH1> commanded<MH6680> <i>us</i> before<MH6440> he died<MH4194>, saying<MH559>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/50-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>‘This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> you shall say<MH559> to Joseph<MH3130>: “Please<MH4994> forgive<MH5375>, I beg<MH577> you, the offense<MH6588> of your brothers<MH251> and their sin<MH2403b>, for they did<MH1580> you wrong<MH7463a>.”’ And now<MH6258>, please<MH4994> forgive<MH5375> the offense<MH6588> of the servants<MH5650> of the God<MH430> of your father<MH1>.” And Joseph<MH3130> wept<MH1058> when they spoke<MH1696> to him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/50-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Then his brothers<MH251> also<MH1571> came<MH1980> and fell<MH5307> down<MH5307> before<MH6440> him and said<MH559>, “Behold<MH2009>, we are your servants<MH5650>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/50-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>But Joseph<MH3130> said<MH559> to them, “Do not be<MH3372a> afraid<MH3372a>, for am I in<MH8478> God’s<MH430> place<MH8478>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/50-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>As for you, you meant<MH2803> evil<MH7463a> against<MH5921> me, <i>but</i> God<MH430> meant<MH2803> it for good<MH2899b> in<MH4616> order<MH4616> to<MH4616> bring<MH6213a> about<MH6213a> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>this<MH2088> present<MH3117> result, to keep<MH2421a> many<MH7227a> people<MH5971a> alive<MH2421a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/50-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>So<MH6258> therefore, do not be<MH3372a> afraid<MH3372a>; I will provide<MH3557> for you and your little<MH2945> ones<MH2945>.” So he comforted<MH5162> them and spoke<MH1696> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>kindly<MH3820> to them. <p class="hdg">Death of Joseph</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/50-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Now Joseph<MH3130> stayed<MH3427> in Egypt<MH4714>, he and his father’s<MH1> household<MH1004>, and Joseph<MH3130> lived<MH2421a> 110<MH3967, 6235> years<MH8141>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/50-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>Joseph<MH3130> saw<MH7200> the third<MH8029> generation of Ephraim’s<MH669> sons<MH1121>; also<MH1571> the sons<MH1121> of Machir<MH4353>, the son<MH1121> of Manasseh<MH4519>, were born<MH3205> on Joseph’s<MH3130> knees<MH1290>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/50-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Joseph<MH3130> said<MH559> to his brothers<MH251>, “I am about to die<MH4191>, but God<MH430> will assuredly<MH6485> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>take<MH6485> care<MH6485> of<MH6485> you and bring<MH5927> you up<MH5927> from this<MH2088> land<MH776> to the land<MH776> which<MH834> He <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>promised<MH7650> on<MH7650> oath<MH7650> to Abraham<MH85>, to Isaac<MH3327>, and to Jacob<MH3290>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/50-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>Then Joseph<MH3130> made the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> swear<MH7650>, saying<MH559>, “God<MH430> will assuredly<MH6485> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>take<MH6485> care<MH6485> of<MH6485> you, and you shall carry<MH5927> my bones<MH6106> up<MH5927> from here<MH2088>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/50-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>So Joseph<MH3130> died<MH4191> at the age<MH1121> of 110<MH3967, 6235> years<MH8141>;
