<A name="6"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/8-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>he ask'd them, how many loaves have ye? <A name="7"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/8-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>seven, said they, then he order'd the people to sit down on the ground: and taking the seven loaves, he gave thanks, then broke them and gave them to his disciples to distribute among the people, which they accordingly did. <A name="8"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/8-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>and there being a few small fishes, he gave thanks, and order'd them to be distributed. <A name="9"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/8-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>so they all eat and were satisfied, the broken meat that was left amounting to seven baskets. <A name="10"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/8-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>now they that had eaten were four thousand: and then he dismissed them. <A name="11"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/8-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Soon after he and his disciples embark'd, and arrived in the district of Dalmanutha.<p> <A name="12"></a><p class="hdg">The Demand for a Sign<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/16.htm">Matthew 16:1&#8211;4</a>; <a href ="../luke/12.htm#54">Luke 12:54&#8211;56</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/8-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>there the Pharisees being come, they began to dispute with him, and to try him, desir'd he would work some miracle in the sky. <A name="13"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/8-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>but Jesus fetching a deep sigh, said, why does this generation require a sign? I assure you, they shall have none. <A name="14"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/8-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>then leaving them he went aboard again, and pass'd to the other side.<p> <A name="15"></a><p class="hdg">The Leaven of the Pharisees and of Herod<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/16.htm#5">Matthew 16:5&#8211;12</a>; <a href ="../luke/12.htm">Luke 12:1&#8211;3</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/8-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Now the disciples had forgot to take bread, and had but one loaf aboard with them. <A name="16"></a><span class="red"><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/8-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>as he was then directing them diligently to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod, <A name="17"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/8-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>they said to one another, this is because we did not take bread: which Jesus perceiving, <A name="18"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/8-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>said, why do you trouble your heads about your having no bread? are you yet so void of sense, and understanding? are your minds so blinded? <A name="19"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/8-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>have you eyes, and yet don't see? have you ears, and yet not hear? have you lost your memory too? <A name="20"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/8-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>when I divided the five loaves among five thousand people, how many baskets full of fragments did you take away? they answer'd, twelve. <A name="21"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/8-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>and when I divided the seven loaves among four thousand, how many baskets full of fragments did you carry away? they answered, seven. <A name="22"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/8-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>don't you yet, said he, comprehend my meaning?<p> <A name="23"></a><p class="hdg">The Blind Man at Bethsaida<p><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/8-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Afterwards Jesus went to Bethsaida, where they presented to him a blind man, whom they entreated Jesus to touch. <A name="24"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/8-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>then taking the blind man by the hand, he led him out of town, when applying his spittle to the man's eyes, and laying his hands upon him, he ask'd if he saw any thing. <A name="25"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/8-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>so looking up, he said, I see men; for by their walking I distinguish them from trees. <A name="26"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/8-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>then he put his hands upon his eyes, and made him look again, and his sight was so well recovered, he could see distinctly. <A name="27"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/8-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>so he sent him home, with a charge not to go into the town, nor mention it to any body belonging to that place.<p> <A name="28"></a><p class="hdg">Peter&#8217;s Confession of Christ<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/16.htm#13">Matthew 16:13&#8211;20</a>; <a href ="../luke/9.htm#18">Luke 9:18&#8211;20</a>; <a href ="../john/6.htm#67">John 6:67&#8211;71</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/8-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>From thence Jesus went attended with his disciples to the villages of Cesarea Philippi, and ask'd them by the way, who do they say I am? <A name="29"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/8-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>they answered, some say you are John the Baptist; others, Elias; and others, one of the prophets. <A name="30"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/8-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>but who, said he, do you take me to be?
