This article aims to examine education from the global perspective of the world of digitization in which we live and to find an answer to the question what is the purpose of education in the 21st century. From the analyses of different peda-gogical trends and philosophical assumptions underlying them, a conclusion will be drawn about the need for a phi-losophy open to new challenges in today’s educational re-ality in order to achieve this goal. This article will address key issues of the VUCA world concerning education such as digitization, educate to the unknown, the phenomenon of global teenagers and the development of robotics. In this context education is not an exception, and the changes taking place in it are a natural result of the rapid development, wide dissemination and accessibility of information technology and networks. Understanding the methodological and philosophical foundations and principles of the process is a necessary phase of the transition to the digital education, the digital society and the digital economy. In the narrow sense digital education can be understood as a conversion of learning materials and the learning process itself from analog to digital format (i.e. electronic textbooks, electronic libraries, open online courses and webinars, video lectures, etc.), but this phenomenon can be considered in broader terms as the complex changes of infrastructural, managerial, behavioral, cultural nature. Recent events (quarantine almost all over the world because of the Covid-19 pandemic) have made it clear that the broad approach to digitization is necessary for the translation of all education systems across the world to an online format, since it refers not only to the form of presenting educational and control materials but first and foremost to the aspects of general behavior, psychological, cognitive and axiological issues. Studies have shown that in the process of transferring education from the classroom to a distance form, all participants of the educational process (students, teachers, education managers, parents) underwent a reassessment of views on education and its role in the life of a person and society. Furthermore, the contradictions, implicitly or weakly expressed prior to the forced and urgent transition to the distant form, were sharpened, and the problems related, for the most part, not to the technical aspects (although these problems also exist), but to the components of education such as communication, personal development, socialization and even physiology, became most urgent. All this requires more in-depth study, a comprehensive and systematic understanding of all the elements not only from the standpoint of functionality, but also axiological, epistemological, ontological and anthropological meanings. It has become obvious that the focus should be placed not on the technical tools with which digital education is implemented, but on a humanitarian approach with its humanistic values, in the center of which is a person: teacher-pupil /student-director-parent. As participants of the educational process, they determine the goals, objectives and methods of activity, select the appropriate technical means and evaluate their training, educational and development potential; they are the centrum omnium that underlies education. The aim of the article is to map out the current issues related to education in the era of digital and technological changes on the basis of theoretical and research findings. Methods. The published article is based on the theoretical and research findings of various authors and offers a critical reflection on some selected current aspects of education in the digital world, such as the problem of digital dementia and digital intelligence, the addiction associated with it, parenting styles, the development of critical thinking and the formation of a value system. Results. Creating an analysis that explores the current challenges of education in the digital age. In this regard, after referring to the paths pedagogical research and educational practice have been following in this field, three questions are raised in the body of the article—ways of being, of experiencing the world and of creating knowledge of a subject whose relationship with the environment is medi-ated by a technology whose defining feature comes from a digital screen—which are demanding a new way of looking at education. In other words, three issues directly affected by the new scenario created by these technologies and which a (theory of) education of our times cannot ignore as that would amount to not (wanting) to see the transition occurring in ways of thinking and putting education into practice; the (theory of) education in our digital time somehow rests on or revolves around them. The main approaches of modern philosophy to the formation processes of the world educational space are under research. The authors set themselves the goal of identifying the most important consequences of these processes for human consciousness and the evolution of society. The article discusses the impact of digital education on the structure and functions of traditional educational institutions and the modern human consciousness; attention is paid to the consequences of the digitalization of education for such a historically established social group as the professional intelligentsia (clerisy). The analysis of the problem concludes that a fundamentally new model of the transmission of social experience and scientific knowledge is emerging in the modern world educational space. Traditional educational institutions like schools and universities are giving way to a whole system of network structures. We are in the presence of a generation that is already born with proficiency in the use of technology, which can become useful in the motivation of the students, in the effectiveness of learning and in the deployment of essential competencies for the performance in the 21st century. This study analyzed the project &quot;Edulabs&quot;, implemented in Portugal in 2014, by the Ministry of Education. &quot;Edulabs&quot;, as defined by the Ministry of Education, are classrooms with integrated technological systems of hardware, software and educational platforms, intended to be the core of the schooling ecosystem, focusing on mainly on teaching and learning. Using it is easy, attractive and mobilizing. The objectives of this project are to improve the pedagogical work and the use of technology, which in turn will have an impact on the quality of teaching and learning. We analyzed a group of the fifth-year students, as subjects of this project, to understand how they use technology and the teaching and learning methodologies available to them, and what results come from such use. The current research is part of a methodological approach of both a qualitative and quantitative nature. For the data collection, we used the method of observation, the semi structured interview method and the field notes resulting from informal conversations carried out in the context of the study. We also rely on the quantitative analysis, this is done by analyzing the grades obtained by the students, at the end of the period, in order to evaluate their performance in school and compare it with previous performances. The analysis of the collected information and its integration within the schooling system points to the recognition of the students&#39; academic and motivational success. The use of technology allowed the institution to implement new approaches in teaching and learning, at the micro level (classroom) while diverging from the principles, beliefs and attitudes structuring the traditional school.
