<t><p class="indent1">Evil came on them,&#8221; says the LORD.&#8217;&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/2-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Hear the word of the LORD, O house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Israel. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/2-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Thus says the LORD, <p class="indent1stline">&#8220;What injustice <i>or</i> unrighteousness did your fathers find in Me, <t><p class="indent1">That they have wandered far from Me <t><p class="indent1">And [habitually] walked after emptiness <i>and</i> futility and became empty? <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/2-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>&#8220;They did not say, &#8216;Where is the LORD <t><p class="indent1">Who brought us up from the land of Egypt, <t><p class="indent1">Who led us through the wilderness, <t><p class="indent1">Through a land of deserts and of pits, <t><p class="indent1">Through a land of drought and of the deep darkness [of the shadow of death], <t><p class="indent1">Through a land that no man passed through <t><p class="indent1">And where no man lived?&#8217; <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/2-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>&#8220;I brought you into a plentiful land <t><p class="indent1">To eat its fruit and [enjoy] its good things. <t><p class="indent1">But you came and defiled My land <t><p class="indent1">And you made My inheritance repulsive. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/2-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>&#8220;[Even] the priests did not say, &#8216;Where is the LORD?&#8217; <t><p class="indent1">And those who deal with the law [given to Moses] did not know Me. <t><p class="indent1">The rulers <i>and</i> shepherds also transgressed against Me, <t><p class="indent1">And the prophets prophesied by [the authority and in the name of] Baal <t><p class="indent1">And walked after [idolatrous] things that did not benefit [them]. <poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/2-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>&#8220;Therefore I will still contend (struggle) with you [by bringing judgment on you],&#8221; says the LORD, <p class="indent1stline">&#8220;And I will contend with your children&#8217;s children.&#8221; <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/2-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>&#8220;For cross over to the coasts of Kittim (Cyprus) [to the west] and see, <t><p class="indent1">Send also to Kedar (Arabia) [to the east] and carefully observe <i>and</i> consider <t><p class="indent1">And see whether there has been such [a thing] as this! <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/2-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>&#8220;Has a nation [ever] changed gods <t><p class="indent1">Even though they were not gods [but merely man-made objects]? <t><p class="indent1">But My people have exchanged their Glory (the true God) <t><p class="indent1">For that [man-made idol] which does not benefit [them]. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/2-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>&#8220;Be appalled, O heavens, at this; <t><p class="indent1">Be shocked <i>and</i> shudder with horror [at the behavior of the people],&#8221; says the LORD. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/2-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>&#8220;For My people have committed two evils: <p class="indent1stline">They have abandoned (rejected) Me, <t><p class="indent1">The fountain of living water, <t><p class="indent1">And they have carved out their own cisterns, <t><p class="indent1">Broken cisterns <t><p class="indent1">That cannot hold water. <poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/2-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>&#8220;Is Israel a servant? Is he a slave by birth? <t><p class="indent1">Why has he become a captive <i>and</i> a prey? <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/2-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>&#8220;The young lions have roared at him, <t><p class="indent1">They have made their voices heard <i>and</i> roared loudly. <t><p class="indent1">And they have made his land a waste; <t><p class="indent1">His cities have been destroyed and are burned ruins, without inhabitant. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/2-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>&#8220;Moreover, the men of <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>Memphis and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>Tahpanhes [as powerful enemies] <t><p class="indent1">Have shaved the crown of your head [to degrade you]. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/2-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>&#8220;Have you not brought this on yourself <t><p class="indent1">By abandoning (rejecting) the LORD your God <t><p class="indent1">When He led you in the way? <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/2-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>&#8220;Now what are you doing by going to Egypt [in search of an ally], <t><p class="indent1">To drink the [muddy] waters of the Nile? <t><p class="indent1">Or what are you doing by going to Assyria [in search of an ally], <t><p class="indent1">To drink the [muddy] waters of the Euphrates? <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/2-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>&#8220;Your own wickedness will discipline you, <t><p class="indent1">And your desertion of the faith will punish you. <t><p class="indent1">Know therefore that it is an evil and bitter thing <t><p class="indent1">For you to abandon (reject) the LORD your God, <t><p class="indent1">And for you to be indifferent to Me <i>and</i> dismiss the [reverent] fear of Me,&#8221; says the Lord GOD of hosts. <poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/2-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>&#8220;For long ago you broke your yoke [in deliberate disobedience] <t><p class="indent1">And tore off your bonds [of the law that I gave you]; <t><p class="indent1">You said, &#8216;I will not serve <i>and</i> obey You!&#8217; <t><p class="indent1">For on every high hill <t><p class="indent1">And under every green tree <t><p class="indent1">You have lain down [in idolatrous worship] like a [compliant] prostitute. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/2-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>&#8220;Yet I had planted you [O house of Israel as] a choice vine, <t><p class="indent1">A completely faithful seed. <t><p class="indent1">How then have you turned against Me <t><p class="indent1">Into degenerate shoots of a foreign <i>and</i> wild vine [alien to Me]? <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/2-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>&#8220;For though you wash yourself with lye <t><p class="indent1">And use much soap, <t><p class="indent1">The stain of your guilt is [still] before Me [and you are soiled and dirty],&#8221; says the Lord GOD. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/2-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>&#8220;How can you say, &#8216;I am not defiled, <t><p class="indent1">I have not gone after [man-made gods like] the Baals&#8217;? <t><p class="indent1">Look at your way in the valley; <t><p class="indent1">Know [without any doubt] what you have done! <t><p class="indent1">You are a swift <i>and</i> restless young [female] camel [in the heat of her passion] running here and there, <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/2-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Or [you have the untamed and reckless nature of] a wild donkey accustomed to the wilderness, <t><p class="indent1">That sniffs the wind in her passion [for the scent of a mate]. <t><p class="indent1">In her mating season who can restrain her? <t><p class="indent1">No males seeking her need to weary themselves; <t><p class="indent1">In her month they will find her [looking for them]. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/2-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>&#8220;[Cease your mad running after idols to] <t><p class="indent1">Keep your feet from becoming bare <t><p class="indent1">And your throat from becoming dry; <t><p class="indent1">But you said, &#8216;It is hopeless! <t><p class="indent1">For I have loved strangers <i>and</i> foreign gods, <t><p class="indent1">And I will walk after them.&#8217; <poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/2-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>&#8220;As the thief is shamed when he is caught, <t><p class="indent1">So the house of Israel is shamed-- <t><p class="indent1">They, their kings, their leaders, <t><p class="indent1">Their priests, and their prophets-- <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/2-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>Who say to a tree, &#8216;You are my father,&#8217; <t><p class="indent1">And to a stone, &#8216;You gave me birth.&#8217; <t><p class="indent1">For they have turned their backs to Me, <t><p class="indent1">And not their faces; <t><p class="indent1">But in the time of their trouble they will say, <t><p class="indent1">&#8216;Arise [O LORD] and save us.&#8217; <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/2-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>&#8220;But where are your gods <t><p class="indent1">Which you made for yourself? <t><p class="indent1">Let them get up, if they can save you <t><p class="indent1">In the time of your trouble! <t><p class="indent1">For [as many as] the number of your cities <t><p class="indent1">Are your gods, O Judah. [Why do not your many man-made idols run to help you?] <poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/2-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>&#8220;Why do you complain <i>and</i> contend with Me? <t><p class="indent1">You have all rebelled (transgressed) against Me,&#8221; says the LORD. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/2-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>&#8220;In vain I have punished your people [with the consequences of their disobedience]; <t><p class="indent1">They received no insight from correction [and refused to change]. <t><p class="indent1">Your [own] sword has devoured your prophets <t><p class="indent1">Like a destroying lion. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/2-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>&#8220;O generation [that you are], consider <i>and</i> regard carefully the word of the LORD. <t><p class="indent1">Have I been a wilderness to Israel [like a land without food], <t><p class="indent1">A land of thick <i>and</i> deep darkness [like a path without light]? <t><p class="indent1">Why do My people say, &#8216;We [have broken loose and we] are <i>free to</i> roam [at will]; <t><p class="indent1">We will no longer come to You&#8217;? <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/2-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>&#8220;Can a virgin forget [to wear] her ornaments, <t><p class="indent1">Or a bride her attire [that identifies her as a married woman]? <t><p class="indent1">Yet My people have forgotten Me <t><p class="indent1">Days without number. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/2-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>&#8220;How well you prepare your path <t><p class="indent1">To seek <i>and</i> obtain [adulterous] love! <t><p class="indent1">Even the most wicked of women <t><p class="indent1">Have learned [indecent] ways from you. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/2-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>&#8220;Also on your skirts is found <t><p class="indent1">The lifeblood of the innocent poor; <t><p class="indent1">You did not find them breaking in [a house]. <t><p class="indent1">But in spite of all these things [your disobedience, your love of idolatry, your lack of compassion]-- <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/2-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>Yet you keep saying, &#8216;I am innocent; <t><p class="indent1">Surely His anger has turned away from me.&#8217; <t><p class="indent1">Behold (listen very carefully), I will bring you to judgment <i>and</i> will plead my case against you <t><p class="indent1">Because you say, &#8216;I have not sinned.&#8217; <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/2-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>&#8220;Why do you go around <i>and</i> wander so much <t><p class="indent1">Changing your way? <t><p class="indent1">Also, you will be shamed by Egypt <t><p class="indent1">As you were shamed by Assyria. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/2-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>&#8220;From Egypt also you will come away [as captives] <t><p class="indent1">With your hands on your head; <t><p class="indent1">For the LORD has rejected those in whom you trust (confide), <t><p class="indent1">And you will not be successful with them.&#8221;<A name="fn"></a></p><br /><br /><span class="footnotesbot">[a]</span> <span class="fnverse">2</span> In 2:2-3:5 <i>you</i> and <i>your</i> are plural and their antecedent is always the nation of Israel. The nation is sometimes called &#8220;Israel&#8221; and sometimes &#8220;the house of Israel.&#8221;<br><span class="footnotesbot">[b]</span> <span class="fnverse">3</span> In general, <i>sons (children) of Israel</i> or <i>Israel</i> or <i>Israelites</i> refers to all the people (males and females) of the various tribes descended from the twelve sons (Gen 35:23-26) of Jacob (later renamed Israel by God).<br><span class="footnotesbot">[c]</span> <span class="fnverse">16</span> The ruins of ancient Memphis are located on the west bank of the Nile River, about twelve miles south of Cairo.<br><span class="footnotesbot">[d]</span> <span class="fnverse">16</span> This city was located on the eastern edge of the Nile delta.
