You can offer many tips sprinkled throughout your storytime or you may decide the information warrants its own presentation, just for families.

Think about how families are experiencing this separation from the reading resources of the library. It’s likely they have the same stack of books they’ve had since their library closed. Some will not be able to buy books to add to their collection. Parents may also be trying to stretch the books they have; books they got for their two-year-old they may now need to be shared with the four-year-old and the eight-year-old, and the ones for the eight-year-old with the younger children.

Library Storytimes during COVID-19 – a Different Kind of Connection

In part one of a two-part series, Saroj Ghoting, early childhood literacy consultant, looks at ways to adjust storytimes for virtual engagement.

One of the most cherished library programs for young children and their families is storytime. Going virtual during this time of physical distancing brought on by the pandemic offers us opportunities to view our connection with young children and their families in a new light. Our current situation is different from simply adding virtual storytimes to an array of services in more normal times, when people have the option to gather in groups in public places. Families do not have the option to come to the library or to gather in communities. While virtual interactions are not the same as meeting face-to-face, this is a time to explore what works well in an online environment, what we can capitalize on, and what we can learn for the future.

Library Staff Learn Together Across Texas

Texas State Library and Archives Commission (TSLAC) saw the Supercharged Storytimes facilitated group-learning model as an opportunity to deliver continuing education in a new format. TSLAC Continuing Education staff piloted a statewide program that connected Texas storytime practitioners in a new online group-learning environment. For TSLAC staff, the goal with this pilot program "is to create an open space for participants to interact, learn from each other, and build those relationships to create a community of early literacy programming in Texas."

Across Texas, there are 549 main libraries and an additional 340 branch libraries dispersed across a vast geographic area. This can make it challenging for storytime practitioners—and particularly those in small and rural libraries—to connect with other librarians in their field. TSLAC used GoToMeeting and Google Docs to bridge this vast geographic divide by facilitating online group discussions. After completing a Supercharged Storytimes course module, participants listened to discussion questions delivered by TSLAC staff on a GoToMeeting call. Participants then responded to the prompts in a shared Google Doc. Using Google Docs as a communication vehicle allows participants to discuss prompts, pose their own questions, and actively engage with each other without talking over one another. The written document also creates a living record that can be referenced throughout the course.

Supercharged Storytimes Project Concludes, Learning Continues

Over the past four and a half years, WebJunction's Supercharged Storytimes for All project has reached more than 4,300 library staff, instilling the skills and confidence to be intentional in incorporating strategies into storytime to make a positive impact on the development of early literacy skills in young children. This amazing and impactful project was made possible through funding from OCLC and the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Supercharged Storytimes, launched as a pilot in 2014 and continued with a follow-on grant that wrapped up in April 2019. While the project has concluded, a powerful set of free resources is now available for library staff to learn from and build on.

The Supercharged Storytimes for All project expanded the successful pilot training for library storytime practitioners, which focused on learning skills to boost early literacy development in young children. In the recent webinar, Supercharge Your Storytime Assessment: Using Data to Tell Your Story, presenters and participants acknowledged the challenges around assessment while offering ideas on how data gathering can be useful. Find out how you can supercharge your skills to demonstrate, inspire, explain, and empower parents and caregivers to try a behavior at home.

Intentionally sharing tips with parents and caregivers at storytime can be a great way to expand learning from library to home. An early literacy tip, or an aside, is a couple of sentences (15-20 seconds) explaining the connection between the activity you are doing in storytime and literacy development. Many storytime practitioners find tips to be a challenging element to incorporate. “The hardest part was getting used to delivering an early literacy message in storytime. One of my co-workers actually ended up in tears! I've found that it can be challenging at first, but it's so important to learn how to do this,” said a participant in the Supercharged Storytimes Facilitator Training. Another participant referenced a colleague retiring early to avoid having to deliver early literacy tips!

New Course: Supercharged Storytimes

Children's storytimes are a hallmark of library programming, and thanks to the VIEWS2 research, we know that library storytimes do matter. Intentionally including early literacy strategies with an interactive approach in storytime leads to corresponding early literacy behaviors in children. Furthermore, libraries are in a unique position to reach children very early in their lives and to connect with parents and caregivers at the same time. The expanded and updated Supercharged Storytimes course turns the findings from the VIEWS2 research into practical strategies for library storytime practitioners.

Partners Selected to Support Supercharged Storytimes Train the Trainer Program

WebJunction is pleased to announce its new training partners for Supercharged Storytimes for All.
