Geography brings a significant contribution to the understanding of the phenomenon of migration and the geo-technologies allow complex quantitative analysis, highlighting the causes and consequences of migration to and from the rural regions. The present study aims to propose a working methodology for the spatial analysis of the phenomenon of migration in the regions of origin and destination of the migration flows. The proposed research methodology is illustrated by applying it to the two geographical regions studied: the Historical Maramureş (Romania) and Castilla la Mancha (Spain). The Geographical Information Systems analysis allows the outlining of the proposed responses to a series of questions on the origin of migration, dispersal, dynamics and impact of these flows on the geographical space. The technology used is ArcGIS Desktop, one of the most comprehensive Geographical Informational System platforms, which facilitates the spatial database, data representation and geostatistical analyses. The spatial models resulted allow a better understanding of the migration trends and answer the questions generated by the complex social and economic phenomena from the rural This paper is the first one attempting to analyze (using specialized aggregation statistical method and GIS) the macrostructure of the migration flows of Russia’s rural population since the end of the 19th century and to the first quarter of the 20th century to create an integral spatial distribution of Russia’s rural population inter-regional movement. For such enormous country as Russia it’s necessary to use macro-analysis of the migration data. The second section of the paper gives short overview of the peasants’ migrations in Russia and reveals the “bottlenecks” in the relevant research literature. The third section shows that these “bottlenecks” can be overcome using the materials of the 1926 All-Union Population Census. The method is applied for the aggregation of the migration flows network according to the data on all the 29 regions of the country (the fourth section); our NetAgg program permits to construct a macrostructure of the inter-regional migration, to reveal the groups of the main regions — the “consumers” and “suppliers” of rural migrants, to determine the intensities of the migration flows between the revealed homogeneous groups of regions. The third part brings forward the problem of emigration by age and gender, which give a clear view over the situation present in the city mentioned. Using eloquent data, the study show up the demographic changes trying to see to what extent emigration had a contribution to it. With the transition from a planned to a market economy, the post-communist socioeconomic changes have left their mark on the evolution of the rural population not just in terms of structure and quality, but also in terms of numbers. Deindus-trialization and the restructuring processes that occurred in the late 1990s have had a negative effect that manifested itself not only in the rise of unemployment, but also in the directional change of the internal migration. The main objective of the paper is to show how the spatial pattern of migration flows has changed during two time periods: between 1990 to 1996, when the internal movement of people was characterized by rural-urban migration and 1997 to 2011, when – due to the economic restructuring processes – urban-rural migration has prevailed. To interpret this, the paper focuses on assessing the current state and the spatial differentiation of migration in Romania – based on settlement level data, regardless of the spatial conditionality of the phenomenon-using the technique of spatial autocorrela-tion. The aim is to establish and interpret the different clusters resulting from the similarities in the intensity of the net migration rate, as well as to compare the outputs of these two results.
