astronomer Tycho Brahe to collect DNA samples to determine his true cause of death neared its end Friday. Some would like to follow the Hungarian example and redirect funds from the private to the public sector to shore up the budget and meet European Union requirements. Others, including the prime minister, prefer the status quo.</p> <p>Poland’s budget bill for 2011, currently making its way through parliament, doesn’t seem to require a revision, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Thursday, contradicting an earlier statement by his deputy. Poland’s Economy Minister Waldemar Pawlak said Wednesday the Polish finance minister may soon present a revision of the 2011 government budget after the European Union rejected a proposal to change the way EU members with funded pension systems report debts and deficits to the European Commission.</p> <p>Transfers to the funded part of the pension system inflate Poland’s deficit and debt. The mascots—twins with funky hairdos—are, well, just that. But the names UEFA proposed for them are slightly beyond weird.</p> <p>“One twin wears the red and white of Poland, the other the yellow and blue of Ukraine. They even have their hair dyed in their national colors although, with each having a ball at his feet, it is clear that their favorite sport unites them,” UEFA said.</p> <p>“At Portugal in 2004 there was Kinas. Austria and Switzerland in 2008 had Trix and Flix. Now we want even catchier names to capture the playfulness and the togetherness of this young pair of football lovers who, in tandem, will serve to represent the spirit of the EURO in Poland and Ukraine,” it said.</p> <p>And the even catchier names are: Slavek & Slavko, Siemko & Strimko, or Klemek & Ladko. The parliament Tuesday passed a bill that scraps the Constitutional Court’s jurisdiction in matters of taxation, tax-like contributions and customs levies, except if they infringe rights to life and human dignity.</p> <p>The move eliminates legal grounds for the court to examine the extraordinary “crisis” taxes the government has levied on large foreign retail, telecommunications and energy firms as well as banks. The tax aims to generate budget revenues for several years instead of the probably unpopular measures of cutting spending. Two parties that didn’t win municipal elections in October have formed a coalition.</p> <p>In Prague, the electorate had hoped that TOP 09’s candidate for mayor, former Czech central bank governor Zdenek Tuma, would be able to claim victory, having won the most votes at the polls.</p> <p>Parliamentary democracy is not direct democracy. On Monday, one of his companies said it would buy another, allowing its shareholders to cash in an equivalent of $1.3 billion and keep control over both firms.</p> <p>Polish pay-TV operator Cyfrowy Polsat on Monday said it agreed to buy Poland’s major commercial television broadcaster Telewizja Polsat in a cash-and-shares deal creating Poland’s largest media firm by revenue.</p> <p>The company agreed to buy the shares from Zygmunt Solorz-Zak and Hieronim Ruta, the two shareholders who control both businesses. They’re not as sensitive when it comes to other nations’ feelings. Take recent radio and TV commercials from alternative telephone operator Netia, which features a man talking fake Russian. Sadly, fake Russian is considered to be a hilarious gag in Poland. Seen from a distance, it appears moronic.</p> <p class="p2">Netia’s ad campaign is made to look and sound like old broadcasts of Anatoly Kashpirovsky, a controversial Russian psychic healer. Mr. Kashpirovsky gained enormous popularity in the Soviet Union’s final years thanks to his televised healing sessions for the masses. In Poland, where available television programming was still minimal, Mr. Kashpirovsky entranced many viewers.</p> <p class="p1">For the part, Netia’s ad men found an actor, Tomasz Kot, who’s resemblance to Mr. Kashpirovsky is remote and who attempts to speak a kind of broken Russified-Polish gibberish no Russian would recognize as their native tongue. It’s supposed to be hysterically funny as he hypnotically counts from one to eight while delivering Netia’s promotional message. It’s not.</p> <p class="p1">It’s just annoying as hell. Imagine a German commercial starring someone speaking pseudo-Polish.
