This was stated today by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in her speech at the International Conference entitled “Central Asia Facing Global Climate Challenges: Consolidation for Shared Prosperity.”

She continued that this is why the European Union is investing in clean energy across the region.

“Including, we recall the Rogun dam in Tajikistan and the Kambarota dam in Kyrgyzstan. They will generate enough energy not only for their two countries, but also to export across Central Asia,” noted the EU President.

Ursula von der Leyen said that they will power up new strategic industries, for instance to process raw materials.

“They will help electric fire our transport corridors, we have been discussing this today, and produce clean hydrogen that could be sold abroad,” added she.

The EU President stressed that this is truly a mutual benefit.

“It is good for our energy independence, it is good for our trade and of course, it is good for our common planet, for climate and for the protection of our nature,” concluded Ursula von der Leyen.

<iframe title="EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has mentioned the enormous potential of the Rogun HPP" width="900" height="506" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/k4poHD9bGAI?feature=oembed&wmode=opaque" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; stated the President of the country, Emomali Rahmon, and emphasized that our global initiatives have also contributed to the implementation of goals, including the goals of the “2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”.

As was stressed, there is a close connection between energy and climate change, and the development of “green” energy can be a positive step towards climate protection.

It was noted that Tajikistan currently produces 98 percent of its electricity from its own hydropower sources, and our country ranks sixth in the world in terms of “green” energy production from renewable sources, and according to the plan, by 2032 it will completely switch to the production of electricity from renewable sources.

It was emphasized that the glaciers of Tajikistan are the main source of water resources in the region, and 60 percent of the water in Central Asia is formed within the territory of our country.

Speaking about the importance of climate change issues, the Head of State expressed concern about the melting of glaciers, including the complete melting of about 1,300 out of 14,000 glaciers in Tajikistan over the past fifty years.

According to the President of the country, this is a very alarming trend, since the glaciers of Tajikistan are not only a source of water for the region, but also play an important role in maintaining the climate of the region.

“The United Nations General Assembly, at the initiative of Tajikistan, declared 2025 the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation and March 21 the World Glacier Day,”- said the Head of State, Emomali Rahmon, and recalled that, based on this decision, the first High-level International Conference dedicated to Glaciers’ Preservation will be held in Dushanbe in May of this year, which will represent another significant role of Tajikistan in the global climate agenda.

Calling on the participants of the forum to actively participate in the work of the Dushanbe Conference and, in general, to contribute to the protection of glaciers, the President of the country expressed confidence that the results of the Dushanbe Conference and the joint efforts of the countries participating in its work will undoubtedly play a considerable role in the successful holding of the COP-30 Conference in Brazil at the end of this year.

The use of modern energy-saving technologies and a careful attitude to water as the most important resource of life were considered the main conditions for reducing its losses. In this context, the international community was called upon to take measures to increase financing for climate protection measures and to mitigate the consequences of natural disasters in vulnerable countries, especially developing countries.

President Emomali Rahmon attends the Central Asia-European Union Summit

english

Most Popular News

President

On April 4, in the city of Samarkand, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Leader of the Nation, Honorable Emomali Rahmon, participated and delivered a speech at the Central

On April 4, in the city of Samarkand, the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Leader of the Nation, Honorable Emomali Rahmon, participated and delivered a speech at the Central Asia-European Union Summit.

The Summit began with the welcoming of the Heads of Central Asian states and the leadership of the European Union by the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, and a joint photo of the Heads of State and official delegations.

The President of our country, Emomali Rahmon, called the continuous development of relations with the European Union at the bilateral and multilateral levels one of the priority directions of Tajikistan’s foreign policy.

It was emphasized that the Roadmap for Deepening Relations between Central Asia and the European Union has become a key document that regulates interregional cooperation.

Regarding the state of trade and economic cooperation between the countries of Central Asia and the European Union, the Head of State, Emomali Rahmon, stated that «we aim to further expand the export of products from Tajik manufacturers to European markets, including through the use of mutual trade preferences.»

The Head of State, Honorable Emomali Rahmon, reflected on the opportunities and natural resources of our country, the potential of the industrial, energy and agricultural sectors, and stated that Tajikistan is interested in attracting foreign investment, importing new European technologies and using the experience of reputable companies.

The participation of the European Union in financing projects in the energy, agricultural, industrial, transport and communication infrastructure sectors was considered important.

It was emphasized that the issue of energy development is becoming increasingly important, given the increasing demand for electricity, and therefore, one of the promising areas in our region is cooperation in the field of “green” energy.

“For Tajikistan, the energy sector, namely renewable energy sources, which also include hydropower, is important not only for meeting national socio-economic needs, but also for the further development of regional cooperation,” — stated Emomali Rahmon.

Recalling the contribution of the European Union to the creation and modernization of «green» energy generation capacity in our country, the Head of State, Emomali Rahmon, emphasized its successful participation in the implementation of the projects of the «Norak», «Sebzor» and «Kairakkum» hydroelectric power plants.

The call was made for the European Union to contribute, on a bilateral basis or within the framework of the «Global Gateway» initiative, to the construction and modernization of hydropower facilities that are examples of «green» economy and energy.

The European Union’s assistance in the construction of electricity transmission infrastructure to South Asia through the CASA-1000 transmission line was highly appreciated.

The Head of State, Emomali Rahmon, deliberated on Tajikistan’s plans to increase the capacity of electricity generation from solar and wind energy to 10 percent of all electricity production in the country by 2030.

The Head of State stated that, based on the Strategy for the Development of the “Green” Economy, by 2032 we will fully generate energy in the country from renewable sources, and by 2037 we will turn Tajikistan into a “green” country.

Recalling Tajikistan’s initiatives to address global challenges, including the protection of glaciers, the President of the country emphasized that the first High-level International Conference on this topic is planned to be held in Dushanbe at the end of May this year.
