Our users roam between two sites, with three networked Fuji Xerox MFPs. On each laptop, there are printer ports installed and named after the site. Our users are pretty diligent in selecting the right printer to print from depending on which location they are at so we’ve never had complains in terms of printing. And in fact we prefer to have all printers accessible to all users as users sometimes print via a VPN when they are offsite for our colleagues at the premise to access the hard copies/barcode labels if needed.

I have also not experienced and jammed queues. Users usually cancel jobs that have errors printing (e.g wrong paper size etc).

So far direct print via TCP/IP has served us well. As from what I read it is preferable to setup a print server on a separate VM from the DC and file server. We have used up our budget on IT administration due to the major IT infrastructure overhaul (the rest is going to applications and software) so I don’t really want to be spending on additional Microsoft licenses to host a print server. As it is on our production we run 4 licensed VMs to host our applications and databases on premise and our file server as it is is hosted on our DC (which isn’t best practice but we are on a tight budget with our focus on other areas).

What I can see in future is the addition of IP printers and we really don’t want to be manually installing them on every PC. It’s quite hard to catch everyone at one place to install this. I know that we can role out printer drivers using a print server and GPO but that would mean having to purchase additional Microsoft licenses to host a print server? So far the printers and IPs of the printers haven’t caused us an issue because we only recently overhauled the entire IT infrastructure (back in October) but I do foresee managing printer drivers or configurations in future becoming a pain.

I’m not sure what would be most appropriate for us considering the above situation.

{"@type":"Person
[{"@type":"Answer

Hi,

I’m not a system admin but take control of the IT budget and plan (which amongst other things includes IT administration).

{"@type":"Person
derrick-tye
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/derrick-tye"}},{"@type":"Answer

I forgot to add that on our backup server we have our secondary DC and on a separate VM our anti virus software hosted.

On our disaster recovery server located at our 2nd site we have another DC and a separate VM running our backup and replicate software.

I’m not sure if placing the print server on any of these servers would be appropriate either.

{"@type":"Person
derrick-tye
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/derrick-tye"}},{"@type":"Answer

If you already have file services and shares set up on the DC then your best bet is probably if the server has enough resources… set it up as your print server too. We outsource our IT support to a company and only just recently spent a large sum of money refreshing our company’s IT on premise infrastructure.

We have 20 users using the same laptop brand, make and model and what we did was install printer drivers TCP/IP and imaged the hard disk and deployed the same image to all the laptops (we did this back in October last year).
