Hope because seeing one can inspire the need to protect sharks and their ocean homes.</p> <p>You have the chance to see and feel this at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, where a young shark was unveiled this past week for the fourth time in history.</p> <p>You also might see one at Stinson Beach in Marin, where a lifeguard spotted a 10-foot shark last weekend about 125 yards offshore. This is typical for late summer and early fall, where big sharks often roam the area to mow down salmon staging for their fall run through the bay and up the Sacramento River.</p> <p>Monterey Bay Aquarium has put great white sharks on display for the public and then returned them to the wild on three different occasions since 2004.</p> <p>The newest shark is a young female, about 4 1/2 feet long and 55 pounds. It was caught two weeks ago in a seine net in Santa Monica Bay, kept in a submerged pen and, after it was seen swimming and feeding at ease, brought to Monterey in a 3,000-gallon tank that was mounted on a truck. The hope is the shark will be on exhibit for several months. Because of scheduled work next year, this will likely be your only chance to see a great white shark at the Monterey Aquarium until 2011.</p> <p>Even at just 4 1/2 feet, the way a great white seems to eye you can send a chill down your spine. It's happened to me at sea with an 18-footer next to the boat, and it's happened at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.</p> <p>Other must-sees are these Web sites:</p> <p>-- Shark tracking: Scientists have placed GPS tracking tags on white sharks and you can follow their travels at <em>topp.org</em>. TOPP stands for "Tagging of Pacific Predators." This past winter, when a great white shark was released from Monterey Aquarium, you could track how it swam to Cabo San Lucas at the southern tip of Baja in only 40 days. It then swam about 500 miles up the Sea of Cortez, where the track tag popped off.</p> <p>-- Shark conservation: The Web site <em>seafoodwatch.org</em> provides a "Seafood Watch" guide to sustainable seafood. Sharks are in decline worldwide, primarily because of foreign commercial longliners and netters that kill just about everything they snare. Commercial harvesting can devastate sharks, which are slow-growing. In 2004, 166 nations gave the great white shark special protection as part of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Flora and Fauna. Another Web site dedicated to the protection of sharks and other fish from being wiped out by commercial fleets is <em>oceanaction.org</em>.</p> <p>The Monterey Bay Aquarium has been spectacular since Day 1, but seeing a great white shark can keep you spellbound.</p> <p>The first white shark at the aquarium, in 2004, was seen by more than a million people over six months, and another million saw the other two sharks.</p> <p>Julie Packard, executive director for the aquarium, called the shark "the most power emissary for ocean conservation in our history."</p> <p>And I'll tell you one thing for sure: It's a lot better seeing the shark behind glass than from a surfboard.</p> <div class="infobox"><h3 style="infobox">Monterey Bay Aquarium </h3><p><strong>Cost: </strong>Adults $24.95, children 3-12 $15.95; $2 off for seniors over 65 and students with ID.
