and in the twelfth<MH8147, 6240> year<MH8141> he began<MH2490c> to purge<MH2891> Judah<MH3063> and Jerusalem<MH3389> of the high<MH1116> places<MH1116>, the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>Asherim<MH842>, the carved<MH6456> images<MH6456>, and the cast<MH4541a> metal<MH4541a> images<MH4541a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/34-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>They tore<MH5422> down<MH5422> the altars<MH4196> of the Baals<MH1168a> in his presence<MH6440>, and he chopped<MH1438> down<MH1438> the incense<MH2553> altars<MH2553> that were high<MH4605> above<MH4605> them; also he broke<MH7665> in<MH7665> pieces<MH7665> the Asherim<MH842>, the carved<MH6456> images<MH6456>, and the cast<MH4541a> metal<MH4541a> images<MH4541a>, and ground<MH1854> <i>them</i> to<MH1854> powder<MH1854>, and scattered<MH2236b> <i>it</i> on the graves<MH6913> of those who had sacrificed<MH2076> to them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/34-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Then he burned<MH8313> the bones<MH6106> of the priests<MH3548> on their altars<MH4196> and purged<MH2891> Judah<MH3063> and Jerusalem<MH3389>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/34-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>In the cities<MH5892b> of Manasseh<MH4519>, Ephraim<MH669>, Simeon<MH8095>, and as far<MH5704> as Naphtali<MH5321>, in their surrounding<MH5439> spaces<MH7339>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/34-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>he also tore<MH5422> down<MH5422> the altars<MH4196> and crushed<MH3807> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>Asherim<MH842> and the carved<MH6456> images<MH6456> into powder<MH1854>, and chopped<MH1438> down<MH1438> all<MH3605> the incense<MH2553> altars<MH2553> throughout<MH3605> the land<MH776> of Israel<MH3478>. Then he returned<MH7725> to Jerusalem<MH3389>. <p class="hdg">Josiah Repairs the Temple</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/34-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Now in the eighteenth<MH8083, 6240> year<MH8141> of his reign<MH4427a>, when he had purged<MH2891> the land<MH776> and the house<MH1004>, he sent<MH7971> Shaphan<MH8227b> the son<MH1121> of Azaliah<MH683>, Maaseiah<MH4641> an official<MH8269> of the city<MH5892b>, and Joah<MH3098> the son<MH1121> of Joahaz<MH3099> the secretary<MH4206c>, to repair<MH2388> the house<MH1004> of the LORD<MH3068> his God<MH430>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/34-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>They came<MH935> to Hilkiah<MH2518> the high<MH1419> priest<MH3548> and gave<MH5414> him the money<MH3701> that was brought<MH935> into the house<MH1004> of God<MH430>, which<MH834> the Levites<MH3881>, the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>doorkeepers<MH8104, 5592b>, had collected<MH622> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>from Manasseh<MH4519> and Ephraim<MH669>, and from all<MH3605> the remnant<MH7611> of Israel<MH3478>, from all<MH3605> Judah<MH3063> and Benjamin<MH1144> and the inhabitants<MH3427> of Jerusalem<MH3389>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/34-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Then they handed<MH5414, 3027> it over<MH5414> to the workmen<MH4399, 6213a> who had<MH6485> the oversight<MH6485> of the house<MH1004> of the LORD<MH3068>, and the workmen<MH4399, 6213a> who<MH834> were working<MH6213a> in the house<MH1004> of the LORD<MH3068> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>used<MH5414> it to restore<MH918> and repair<MH2388> the house<MH1004>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/34-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>They in turn gave<MH5414> <i>it</i> to the carpenters<MH2796> and the builders<MH1129> to buy<MH7069> quarried<MH4274> stone<MH68> and timber<MH6086> for couplings<MH4226>, and to make<MH7136b> beams<MH7136b> for the houses<MH1004> which<MH834> the kings<MH4428> of Judah<MH3063> had let go<MH7843> to<MH7843> ruin<MH7843>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/34-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>The men<MH376> did<MH6213a> the work<MH4399> faithfully<MH530> with foremen<MH6485> over<MH5921> them to supervise<MH5329>: Jahath<MH3189> and Obadiah<MH5662>, the Levites<MH3881> of the sons<MH1121> of Merari<MH4847>, Zechariah<MH2148a> and Meshullam<MH4918> of the sons<MH1121> of the Kohathites<MH6956>, and the Levites<MH3881>, all<MH3605> who were skillful<MH995> with musical<MH7892a> instruments<MH3627>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/34-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span><i>They were</i> also in<MH5921> charge<MH5921> of<MH5921> the burden<MH5449> bearers<MH5449>, and supervised<MH5329> all<MH3605> the workmen<MH6213a, 4399> from job<MH5656> to job<MH5656>; and some<MH4480> of the Levites<MH3881> <i>were</i> scribes<MH5613b>, and officials<MH7860>, and gatekeepers<MH7778>. <p class="hdg">Hilkiah Discovers the Lost Book of the Law</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/34-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>When they were bringing<MH3318> out<MH3318> the money<MH3701> which had been brought<MH935> into the house<MH1004> of the LORD<MH3068>, Hilkiah<MH2518> the priest<MH3548> found<MH4672> the Book<MH5612> of the Law<MH8451> of the LORD<MH3068> <i>given</i> by Moses<MH4872>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/34-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Hilkiah<MH2518> responded<MH6030a> and said<MH559> to Shaphan<MH8227b> the scribe<MH5613b>, “I have found<MH4672> the Book<MH5612> of the Law<MH8451> in the house<MH1004> of the LORD<MH3068>.” And Hilkiah<MH2518> gave<MH5414> the book<MH5612> to Shaphan<MH8227b>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/34-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Then Shaphan<MH8227b> brought<MH935> the book<MH5612> to the king<MH4428> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>reported<MH7725> further<MH5750> word<MH1697> to the king<MH4428>, saying<MH559>, “Everything<MH3605> that was <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>entrusted<MH5414, 3027> to your servants<MH5650>, they are doing<MH6213a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/34-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>They have also emptied<MH5413> out<MH5413> the money<MH3701> which was found<MH4672> in the house<MH1004> of the LORD<MH3068>, and have handed<MH5414, 3027> it over<MH5414> to the supervisors<MH6485> and the workmen<MH4399, 6213a>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/34-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Moreover, Shaphan<MH8227b> the scribe<MH5613b> informed<MH5046> the king<MH4428>, saying<MH559>, “Hilkiah<MH2518> the priest<MH3548> gave<MH5414> me a book<MH5612>.” And Shaphan<MH8227b> read<MH7121> from it in the presence<MH6440> of the king<MH4428>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/34-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>When the king<MH4428> heard<MH8085> the words<MH1697> of the Law<MH8451>, he tore<MH7167> his clothes<MH899b>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/34-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Then the king<MH4428> commanded<MH6680> Hilkiah<MH2518>, Ahikam<MH296> the son<MH1121> of Shaphan<MH8227b>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>Abdon<MH5658> the son<MH1121> of Micah<MH4318>, Shaphan<MH8227b> the scribe<MH5613b>, and Asaiah<MH6222> the king’s<MH4428> servant<MH5650>, saying<MH559>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/34-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>“Go<MH1980>, inquire<MH1875> of the LORD<MH3068> for me and for those who are left<MH7604> in Israel<MH3478> and Judah<MH3063>, concerning<MH5921> the words<MH1697> of the book<MH5612> which<MH834> has been found<MH4672>; for the wrath<MH2534> of the LORD<MH3068> which<MH834> has poured<MH5413> out<MH5413> on us is great<MH1419>, because<MH5921, 834> our fathers<MH1> have not kept<MH8104> the word<MH1697> of the LORD<MH3068>, to act<MH6213a> in accordance with everything<MH3605> that is written<MH3789> in this<MH2088> book<MH5612>.” <p class="hdg">Huldah, the Prophetess, Speaks</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/34-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>So Hilkiah<MH2518> and <i>those</i> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>whom<MH834> the king<MH4428> had told went<MH1980> to Huldah<MH2468> the prophetess<MH5031>, the wife<MH802> of Shallum<MH7967> the son<MH1121> of <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>Tokhath<MH8445>, the son<MH1121> of Hasrah<MH2641>, the keeper<MH8104> of the wardrobe<MH899b> (she lived<MH3427> in Jerusalem<MH3389> in the Second<MH4932> Quarter); and they spoke<MH1696> to her regarding this<MH2088>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/34-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>Then she said<MH559> to them, “This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068>, the God<MH430> of Israel<MH3478> says<MH559>: ‘Tell<MH559> the man<MH376> who<MH834> sent<MH7971> you to Me, <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/34-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>this<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068> says<MH559>: “Behold<MH2009>, I am bringing<MH935> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>evil<MH7463a> on this<MH2088> place<MH4725> and on its inhabitants<MH3427>, all<MH3605> the curses<MH423> written<MH3789> in the book<MH5612> which<MH834> they have read<MH7121> in the presence<MH6440> of the king<MH4428> of Judah<MH3063>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/34-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>Since<MH8478, 834> they have abandoned<MH5800a> Me and have burned<MH6999> incense<MH6999> to other<MH312> gods<MH430>, so<MH4616> that<MH4616> they may provoke<MH3707> Me to<MH3707> anger<MH3707> with all<MH3605> the works<MH4639> of their hands<MH3027>, My wrath<MH2534> will be poured<MH5413> out<MH5413> on this<MH2088> place<MH4725> and it will not be quenched<MH3518>.”’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/34-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>But to the king<MH4428> of Judah<MH3063> who sent<MH7971> you to inquire<MH1875> of the LORD<MH3068>, this<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> you shall say<MH559> to him: ‘This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068>, the God<MH430> of Israel<MH3478> says<MH559>: <i>In regard to</i> the words<MH1697> which<MH834> you have heard<MH8085>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/34-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>“Because<MH3282> your heart<MH3824> was tender<MH7401> and you humbled<MH3665> yourself before<MH4480, 6440> God<MH430> when you heard<MH8085> His words<MH1697> against<MH5921> this<MH2088> place<MH4725> and its inhabitants<MH3427>, and <i>because</i> you humbled<MH3665> yourself before<MH6440> Me, tore<MH7167> your clothes<MH899b>, and wept<MH1058> before<MH6440> Me, I have indeed<MH1571> heard<MH8085> you,” declares<MH5002> the LORD<MH3068>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/34-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>“Behold<MH2009>, I will gather<MH622> you to your fathers<MH1>, and you will be gathered<MH622> to your grave<MH6913> in peace<MH7965>, so your eyes<MH5869> will not see<MH7200> all<MH3605> the evil<MH7463a> which<MH834> I am bringing<MH935> on this<MH2088> place<MH4725> and its inhabitants<MH3427>.”’” And they brought<MH7725> back<MH7725> word<MH1697> to the king<MH4428>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/34-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>Then the king<MH4428> sent<MH7971> <i>word</i> and gathered<MH622> all<MH3605> the elders<MH2205> of Judah<MH3063> and Jerusalem<MH3389>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/34-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>The king<MH4428> went<MH5927> up<MH5927> to the house<MH1004> of the LORD<MH3068> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>with all<MH3605> the men<MH376> of Judah<MH3063>, the inhabitants<MH3427> of Jerusalem<MH3389>, the priests<MH3548>, the Levites<MH3881>, and all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a>, from the greatest<MH1419> to the least<MH6996a>; and he read<MH7121> in their <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>presence<MH241> all<MH3605> the words<MH1697> of the Book<MH5612> of the Covenant<MH1285> which was found<MH4672> in the house<MH1004> of the LORD<MH3068>. <p class="hdg">Josiah’s Good Reign</p><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/34-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>Then the king<MH4428> stood<MH5975> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>in his place<MH5977> and made<MH3772> a covenant<MH1285> before<MH6440> the LORD<MH3068> to walk<MH1980> after<MH310> the LORD<MH3068>, and to keep<MH8104> His commandments<MH4687>, His testimonies<MH5715>, and His statutes<MH2706> with all<MH3605> his heart<MH3824> and with all<MH3605> his soul<MH5315>, to perform<MH6213a> the words<MH1697> of the covenant<MH1285> that are written<MH3789> in this<MH2088> book<MH5612>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/34-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>Furthermore, he made all<MH3605> who were<MH4672> present<MH4672> in Jerusalem<MH3389> and Benjamin<MH1144> stand<MH5975> <i>with him.</i> So the inhabitants<MH3427> of Jerusalem<MH3389> acted<MH6213a> in accordance with the covenant<MH1285> of God<MH430>, the God<MH430> of their fathers<MH1>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/34-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>Josiah<MH2977> removed<MH5493> all<MH3605> the abominations<MH8441> from all<MH3605> the lands<MH776> belonging to the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478>, and made all<MH3605> who were<MH4672> present<MH4672> in Israel<MH3478> serve<MH5647> the LORD<MH3068> their God<MH430>.
