The tribe of Benjamin held a significant position in Israel's history, providing the first king, Saul. The mention of Benjamin's sons here highlights the genealogical records that were crucial for maintaining tribal identities and inheritance rights. The tribe of Benjamin was known for its warriors and played a key role in various battles, including those during the period of the Judges and the early monarchy.<p><b>Bela,</b><br>Bela is often listed as the firstborn son of Benjamin. His descendants are mentioned in several genealogical records, indicating their importance within the tribe. The name Bela means "destruction" or "devouring," which may reflect the character or fate of his lineage. Bela's descendants settled in various regions, contributing to the expansion and influence of the tribe of Benjamin.<p><b>Becher,</b><br>Becher is another son of Benjamin, though his mention in genealogies varies. The name Becher means "young camel" or "firstborn," suggesting a position of prominence or strength. His descendants are less frequently mentioned, but they were part of the tribal structure that contributed to the overall strength and unity of Benjamin. The variations in genealogical records may reflect different traditions or historical circumstances.<p><b>and Jediael.</b><br>Jediael is listed as a son of Benjamin, though not always consistently across different biblical records. The name Jediael means "God knows" or "known by God," indicating a divine connection or favor. His descendants are noted for their valor and military prowess, aligning with the reputation of the tribe of Benjamin as skilled warriors. The inclusion of Jediael in this genealogy underscores the importance of divine acknowledgment and blessing in the lineage of Israel.<div class="vheading2">Persons / Places / Events</div>1. <b><a href="/topical/b/benjamin.htm">Benjamin</a></b><br>The youngest son of Jacob and Rachel, Benjamin is one of the twelve tribes of Israel. Ashbel is the second son of Benjamin in Numbers 26 and 1 Chronicles 8, and the third (perhaps second) in Genesis 46<p><div class="vheading2"><a href="/commentaries/pulpit/1_chronicles/7.htm">Pulpit Commentary</a></div><span class="cmt_sub_title">Verse 6.</span> - The sons of <span class="cmt_word">Benjamin; Bela</span>, and <span class="cmt_word">Becher</span>, and <span class="cmt_word">Jediael</span>, three. We have four passages for our authorities as to the sons of Benjamin, and it is not altogether easy to bring them into verbal harmony. They are <a href="/genesis/46-21.htm">Genesis 46:21</a>; <a href="/numbers/26-38.htm">Numbers 26:38-41</a>; the present passage; and ch. 8. Our present passage mentions three sons, as though they were all, and immediately proceeds to their posterity. The list in Genesis mentions ten, of whom, however, we know (<a href="/numbers/26-40.htm">Numbers 26:40</a>; <a href="/1_chronicles/8-3.htm">1 Chronicles 8:3, 4</a>) that three, Naaman, Ard, and Gem, were grandsons, being sons of Bela, under which circumstances the order in which the two former stand in Genesis is remarkable. Again, while Becher is given as the second son in both Genesis and our present place, he is not mentioned in <a href="/numbers/26-38.htm">Numbers 26:38-41</a> and in <a href="/1_chronicles/8-1.htm">1 Chronicles 8:1</a>. Ashbel, who in Genesis is given as the third, is expressly called the second son. Among the Ephraimites, however (<a href="/numbers/26-35.htm">Numbers 26:35</a>), a Becher, with his descendants the Bachrites, is mentioned, and it is not improbable that, by marriage, the family were at <span class="accented">that time</span>, for manifest reasons of inheritance and possession, reckoned in this tribe, though by blood of the tribe of Benjamin. This subject is skilfully discussed by Lord A. C. Hervey (Smith's 'Bible Dictionary,' 1:175). Lastly, Jediael of this passage and ver. 10 is not found in Genesis, in Numbers, or in our ch. 8. This name seems to have superseded in our passage the name Ashbel in Genesis, though it is impossible to speak certainly. It cannot be supposed to designate the same person, but rather a descendant in the same branch, whose family had come to importance "in the days of David." <span class="p"><br /><br /></span><span class="versiontext"><a href="/commentaries/1_chronicles/7-6.htm">Parallel Commentaries ...</a></span><span class="p"><br /><br /><br /></span><a name="lexicon" id="lexicon"></a><div class="vheading">Hebrew</div><span class="word">The three</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1513;&#1473;&#1456;&#1500;&#1465;&#1513;&#1473;&#1464;&#1469;&#1492;&#1475;</span> <span class="translit">(&#353;&#601;&#183;l&#333;&#183;&#353;&#257;h)</span><br /><span class="parse">Number - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_7969.htm">Strong's 7969: </a> </span><span class="str2">Three, third, thrice</span><br /><br /><span class="word">[sons] of Benjamin:</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1489;&#1468;&#1460;&#1504;&#1456;&#1497;&#1464;&#1502;&#1460;&#1431;&#1503;</span> <span class="translit">(bin&#183;y&#257;&#183;min)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - proper - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_1144.htm">Strong's 1144: </a> </span><span class="str2">Benjamin -- 'son of the right hand', youngest son of Jacob, also the name of two other Israelites</span><br /><br /><span class="word">Bela,</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1489;&#1468;&#1462;&#1447;&#1500;&#1463;&#1506;</span> <span class="translit">(be&#183;la&#8216;)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - proper - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_1106.htm">Strong's 1106: </a> </span><span class="str2">Bela -- an Edomite, also two Israelites</span><br /><br /><span class="word">Becher,</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1493;&#1464;&#1489;&#1462;&#1435;&#1499;&#1462;&#1512;</span> <span class="translit">(w&#257;&#183;&#7687;e&#183;&#7733;er)</span><br /><span class="parse">Conjunctive waw &#124; Noun - proper - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_1071.htm">Strong's 1071: </a> </span><span class="str2">Becher -- 'young camel', two Israelites</span><br /><br /><span class="word">and Jediael.</span><br /><span class="heb">&#1493;&#1460;&#1497;&#1491;&#1460;&#1469;&#1497;&#1506;&#1458;&#1488;&#1461;&#1430;&#1500;</span> <span class="translit">(w&#238;&#183;&#7695;&#238;&#183;&#8216;a&#774;&#183;&#8217;&#234;l)</span><br /><span class="parse">Conjunctive waw &#124; Noun - proper - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_3043.htm">Strong's 3043: </a> </span><span class="str2">Jediael -- 'knowing God', three Israelites</span><br /><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><div class="vheading">Links</div><a href="/niv/1_chronicles/7-6.htm">1 Chronicles 7:6 NIV</a><br /><a href="/nlt/1_chronicles/7-6.htm">1 Chronicles 7:6 NLT</a><br /><a href="/esv/1_chronicles/7-6.htm">1 Chronicles 7:6 ESV</a><br /><a href="/nasb/1_chronicles/7-6.htm">1 Chronicles 7:6 NASB</a><br /><a href="/kjv/1_chronicles/7-6.htm">1 Chronicles 7:6 KJV</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="//bibleapps.com/1_chronicles/7-6.htm">1 Chronicles 7:6 BibleApps.com</a><br /><a href="//bibliaparalela.com/1_chronicles/7-6.htm">1 Chronicles 7:6 Biblia Paralela</a><br /><a href="//holybible.com.cn/1_chronicles/7-6.htm">1 Chronicles 7:6 Chinese Bible</a><br /><a href="//saintebible.com/1_chronicles/7-6.htm">1 Chronicles 7:6 French Bible</a><br /><a href="/catholic/1_chronicles/7-6.htm">1 Chronicles 7:6 Catholic Bible</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="/1_chronicles/7-6.htm">OT History: 1 Chronicles 7:6 The sons of Benjamin: Bela and Becher (1 Chron. 1Ch iCh i Ch 1 chr 1chr)</a></div></div></td></tr></table></div><div id="left"><a href="/1_chronicles/7-5.htm" onmouseover='lft.src="/leftgif.png"' onmouseout='lft.src="/left.png"' title="1 Chronicles 7:5"><img src="/left.png" name="lft" border="0" alt="1 Chronicles 7:5" /></a></div><div id="right"><a href="/1_chronicles/7-7.htm" onmouseover='rght.src="/rightgif.png"' onmouseout='rght.src="/right.png"' title="1 Chronicles 7:7"><img src="/right.png" name="rght" border="0" alt="1 Chronicles 7:7" /></a></div><div id="botleft"><a href="#" onmouseover='botleft.src="/botleftgif.png"' onmouseout='botleft.src="/botleft.png"' title="Top of Page"><img src="/botleft.png" name="botleft" border="0" alt="Top of Page" /></a></div><div id="botright"><a href="#" onmouseover='botright.src="/botrightgif.png"' onmouseout='botright.src="/botright.png"' title="Top of Page"><img src="/botright.png" name="botright" border="0" alt="Top of Page" /></a></div><div id="bot"><iframe width="100%" height="1500" scrolling="no" src="/botmenubhnew2.htm" frameborder="0"></iframe></div></td></tr></table></div></body></html>
