For we saw<MG3708> His star<MG792> in the east<MG395> and have come<MG2064> to worship<MG4352> Him.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/2-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>When Herod<MG2264> the king<MG935> heard<MG191> <i>this,</i> he was troubled<MG5015>, and all<MG3956> Jerusalem<MG2414> with him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/2-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>And gathering<MG4863> together<MG4863> all<MG3956> the chief<MG749> priests<MG749> and scribes<MG1122> of the people<MG2992>, he inquired<MG4441> of them where<MG4226> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>Messiah<MG5547> was to be born<MG1080>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/2-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>They said<MG3004> to him, “In Bethlehem<MG965> of Judea<MG2449>; for this<MG3779> is what<MG3704> has been written<MG1125> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>by <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>the prophet<MG4396>: <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/2-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>‘AND YOU, BETHLEHEM<MG965>, LAND<MG1093> OF JUDAH<MG2455>, <t><p class="indent1">ARE BY NO<MG3760> MEANS<MG3760> LEAST<MG1646> AMONG<MG1722> THE LEADERS<MG2233> OF JUDAH<MG2455>; <t><p class="indent1">FOR FROM YOU WILL COME<MG1831> FORTH<MG1831> A RULER<MG2233> <t><p class="indent1">WHO<MG3748> WILL SHEPHERD<MG4165> MY PEOPLE<MG2992> ISRAEL<MG2474>.’” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/2-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Then<MG5119> Herod<MG2264> secretly<MG2977> called<MG2564> for the magi<MG3097> and determined<MG198b> from them the exact<MG5550> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>time<MG5550> the star<MG792> appeared<MG5316>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/2-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>And he sent<MG3992> them to Bethlehem<MG965> and said<MG3004>, “Go<MG4198> and search<MG1833> carefully<MG199> for the Child<MG3813>; and when<MG1875> you have found<MG2147> <i>Him,</i> report<MG518> to me, so<MG3704> that<MG3704> I too<MG2532> may come<MG2064> and worship<MG4352> Him.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/2-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>After<MG1161> hearing<MG191> the king<MG935>, they went<MG4198> on<MG4198> their way<MG4198>; and behold<MG2400>, the star<MG792>, which<MG3739> they had seen<MG3708> in the east<MG395>, went<MG4254> on ahead<MG4254> of them until<MG2193> it came<MG2064> to a stop<MG2476> over<MG1883> <i>the place</i> where<MG3757> the Child<MG3813> was <i>to be found.</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/2-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>When they saw<MG3708> the star<MG792>, they rejoiced<MG5463> exceedingly<MG4970> with great<MG3173> joy<MG5479>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/2-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>And after<MG2532> they came<MG2064> into the house<MG3614>, they saw<MG3708> the Child<MG3813> with His mother<MG3384> Mary<MG3137>; and they fell<MG4098> down<MG4098> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>worshiped<MG4352> Him. Then<MG2532> they opened<MG455> their treasures<MG2344> and presented<MG4374> to Him gifts<MG1435> of gold<MG5557>, frankincense<MG3030>, and myrrh<MG4666>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/2-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And after being warned<MG5537> <i>by God</i> in a dream<MG3677> not to return<MG344> to Herod<MG2264>, <i>the magi</i> left<MG402> for their own country<MG5561> by another<MG243> way<MG3598>. <p class="hdg">The Escape to Egypt</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/2-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> when they had gone<MG402>, behold<MG2400>, an angel<MG32a> of the Lord<MG2962> *appeared<MG5316> to Joseph<MG2501> in a dream<MG3677> and said<MG3004>, “Get<MG1453> up<MG1453>! Take<MG3880> the Child<MG3813> and His mother<MG3384> and flee<MG5343> to Egypt<MG125>, and stay<MG1510> there<MG1563> until<MG2193> I tell<MG3004> you; for Herod<MG2264> is<MG3195> going<MG3195> to<MG3195> search<MG2212> for<MG2212> the Child<MG3813> to kill<MG622> Him.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/2-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>So<MG1161> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>Joseph got<MG1453> up<MG1453> and took<MG3880> the Child<MG3813> and His mother<MG3384> while it was still night<MG3571>, and left<MG402> for Egypt<MG125>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/2-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>He <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>stayed<MG1510> there<MG1563> until<MG2193> the death<MG5054> of Herod<MG2264>; <i>this happened</i> so<MG2443> that<MG2443> what<MG3588> had been spoken<MG3004> by the Lord<MG2962> through<MG1223> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>the prophet<MG4396> would be fulfilled<MG4137>: “OUT OF EGYPT<MG125> I CALLED<MG2564> MY SON<MG5207>.” <p class="hdg">Herod Slaughters Babies</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/2-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Then<MG5119> when Herod<MG2264> saw<MG3708> that he had been tricked<MG1702> by the magi<MG3097>, he became very<MG3029> enraged<MG2373>, and sent<MG649> <i>men</i> and killed<MG337> all<MG3956> the boys<MG3816> who were in Bethlehem<MG965> and all<MG3956> its vicinity<MG3725> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>who were two<MG1332> years<MG1332> old<MG1332> or under<MG2737b>, according<MG2596> to the time<MG5550> which<MG3739> he had determined<MG198b> from the magi<MG3097>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/2-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Then<MG5119> what<MG3588> had been spoken<MG3004> through<MG1223> Jeremiah<MG2408> the prophet<MG4396> was fulfilled<MG4137>: <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/2-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>“A VOICE<MG5456> WAS HEARD<MG191> IN RAMAH<MG4471>, <t><p class="indent1">WEEPING<MG2805> AND GREAT<MG4183> MOURNING<MG3602>, <t><p class="indent1">RACHEL<MG4478> WEEPING<MG2805> FOR HER CHILDREN<MG5043>; <t><p class="indent1">AND SHE REFUSED<MG3756, 2309> TO BE COMFORTED<MG3870>, <t><p class="indent1">BECAUSE<MG3754> THEY WERE NO<MG3756> MORE.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/2-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>But when Herod<MG2264> died<MG5053>, behold<MG2400>, an angel<MG32a> of the Lord<MG2962> *appeared<MG5316> in a dream<MG3677> to Joseph<MG2501> in Egypt<MG125>, and said<MG3004>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/2-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>“Get<MG1453> up<MG1453>, take<MG3880> the Child<MG3813> and His mother<MG3384>, and go<MG4198> to the land<MG1093> of Israel<MG2474>; for those<MG3588> who sought<MG2212> the Child’s<MG3813> life<MG5590> are dead<MG2348>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/2-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>So<MG1161> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>Joseph got<MG1453> up<MG1453>, took<MG3880> the Child<MG3813> and His mother<MG3384>, and came<MG1525> into the land<MG1093> of Israel<MG2474>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/2-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>But when he heard<MG191> that Archelaus<MG745> was reigning<MG936> over Judea<MG2449> in<MG473> place<MG473> of<MG473> his father<MG3962> Herod<MG2264>, he was<MG5399> afraid<MG5399> to go<MG565> there<MG1563>.
