Why should it matter what size a city is? Anyone looking at statistics, especially those pertaining to crime, understands that crime is more frequent where people are concentrated. Our Canadian neighbors to the north can attest to that, their biggest crime centers being Toronto and Vancouver; more people = more crime.

Secondly, Texas is virtually alone in preventing citizens from openly carrying firearms, with the exception of Liberal meccas like New York City. While I have nothing against liberals, their official policies also lack logic. Again, one must study crime in order to get a clear picture of real life. It is extremely seldom, if ever, that a gang member or criminal arrives at the scene of the crime with an openly carried, holstered firearm. Whenever you see this, it's a good bet that such a carrier, then, is a police officer or responsibly armed citizen.

Next, the author has it wrong about Detroit. Any non-felon is legally able to purchase and possess a firearm can strap it on and head out the door! No "permission" is required. All those limitations apply ONLY to concealed carry, where a permit IS needed. Peculiar to Michigan law, by the way, is their list of "no carry zones." These include hospitals, day care centers, sports arenas and schools. Neither concealed or unlicensed open carry are allowed in these places, BUT, a person with a concealed carry permit (CPL) CAN carry OPENLY in all of those places. This provision is basically an acknowledgement and vote of confidence in the training and extensive background check that permit holders have gone through. Recent events where CPLs, in compliance with the law, have attended school events openly carrying and upset some people have set a chain of events in motion that may well do away with these zones for license holders.

My fourth point: those Texans upset by the display of openly slung rifles should get behind this bill, since it will give residents the option to carry a handgun instead. The 2nd Amendment guarantees a right to "bear" (or carry) arms, and not prohibiting rifles is the way Texas has lived up to the letter of the law while skirting it with their provision against openly carried handguns (while charging a FEE to permit concealed carry). So, more simply stated, this law will put Houston in line with the Constitution and will reduce the frequency of hoplophobes encountering big, scary rifles at the local Starbuck's.

My final point: criminals don't care. Period. None of these laws helps or hinders them. They're going to carry their guns whenever, wherever and however they like. Any and all legal prohibitions ONLY impact the law abiding, putting them at a disadvantage. Criminals, gangs, pimps and drug dealers won't take any training; they won't submit to any background checks; they don't observe "no guns allowed" signs. The only thing that gun restrictions do is hobble the innocent. The logic is both simple and irrefutable. Get with the program, Texas!

April 5 @ 10:11 p.m.

David Noble via Texas Tribune on Facebook

I seem to recall the same "rivers of blood in the streets" civilian disarmament agitprop and beta-male penis references when Texas enacted permitted concealed carry.
