Evidence of early Continental invaders is seen at Kits Coty House near Aylesford, a long <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off eb" data-term="barrow" href="https://www.britannica.com/dictionary/barrow" data-type="EB">barrow</a> at Chilham, and Bigbury (a Belgic hill fort). Roman settlement began with the subjugation of the area in 43 <span class="text-smallcaps">ce</span>. The chief Roman supply port was <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Richborough" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Richborough</a>, and the administrative centre was at <span id="ref703913"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Canterbury-England" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Canterbury</a>, where Roman baths and a theatre have been unearthed. Early in the 5th century Kent was invaded by <a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/Jute-people" class="md-crosslink autoxref " data-show-preview="true">Jutes</a> and Saxons, and it became one of the seven kingdoms of Anglo-Saxon Britain. Romney Marsh, one of the world’s finest natural grasslands, is famous for its sheep, but a section of it has been plowed up for the production of spring flowers and bulbs.
