For efficacy study, rats were allocated into 5 groups. Group 1 exposed to saline aerosol (normal control). Asthma was induced in the remaining groups by ovalbumin (OVA). Group 2 was left untreated (positive control). Group 3 received herbal preparation orally 1 hour before OVA challenge. Factors such as prenatal tobacco smoke, genetics, antibiotic use, lung function, environmental tobacco exposure, allergic sensitization, sex and gender, and smoking contribute to its prevalence, morbidity, mortality, and economic burden. Treatment includes bronchodilators, inhibitors of IgE, and other medications. However, current treatments can cause adverse effects, leading to the search for low-risk, non-drug strategies, such as herbal remedies. Traditional herbs have a greater impact on illness with minimal side effects and have been widely used in developing nations. Certain herbs, such as haridra/turmeric, lobelia, black seed, adhatoda, and camphor, have the potential to mitigate symptoms by decreasing inflammation. The numerous anti-asthmatic drugs are available in modern medicine to treat asthma, but they have several disadvantages, including side effects and the cost variations, which compromise treatment compliance. The literature review reveals that traditional herbal medicines have good potential as alternative treatment and management for asthma. However, communities hesitated to use the traditional herbal medicines due to lack of established mechanism of action about their anti-asthmatic potential. The present review aimed to summarise the information stated in the literature about the potential effect of traditional medicinal plants (TMPs) conferring protection against ovalbumin (OVA)-induced asthma model. The literature search was conducted in database like PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar and ScienceDirect. After screening through the literature from 2011 to date, a total of 27 medicinal plants and two polyherbal extracts have been reported to be used as traditional herbal medicines and also utilised to be tested against OVAinduced asthma, were included. We found them to be an important alternative source of treatment for asthma, since some have comparable efficacies with drugs commonly used in the modern system against asthma. All the reported medicinal plants confirmed their traditional use against asthma or its related inflammation. This review is an attempt to bring together some of the common medicinal plants traditionally used to manage asthma. The review focuses on anti-asthmatic plants, their chemistry and pharmacology in an attempt to justify use and also provide a direction for future research. Study Approach: Information on the above was sourced from published articles and reviews on the subject available from various data bases and journals. Fifty-six medicinal plants that have been investigated for anti-asthmatic properties have been reviewed. Findings: Table 1 gives a list of plants reviewed and the mechanism of anti-asthmatic action. Herbal products are receiving increasing attention all over the world for the management of respiratory disorders as these have shown anti-asthmatic, antihistaminic, anti-allergic, antianaphylactic and anti-inflammatory activities. The biochemistry and medicinal significance of polyphenols and flavonoids are now better appreciated in the management of respiratory disorders. The present study was designed to assess the safety and therapeutic efficacy of Kanakasava against ovalbumin-induced bronchial asthma and related airway inflammation in rats due to lack of evidence based therapeutic efficacy data. Material and methods: Male wistar rats were sensitized with allergen (ovalbumin, 40 mg/rat + aluminium hydroxide, 2.0 mg/rat) and treated orally with standard dexamethasone (2.5 mg/kg, b.w.) or Kanakasava (1.23 and 2.46 ml/kg, b.w.) from day 1 to day 28. Inflammatory markers, including cell counts and cytokines such as interleukins (IL-4, IL-5, IL-1β), tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α), leukotriene (LTD-4), immunoglobulin (IgE), nitric oxide and nitrite levels in both blood and broncheo alveolar lavaged fluid (BALF) were analyzed. Abdominal mesentery was studied histologically for mast cell degranulation, whereas lung functions were investigated by spirometer. Method was also developed to quantify gallic acid and ethyl gallate content in Kanakasava by HPTLC for its quality control. Results: None of the rats exhibited mortality and Kanakasava was found to be safe at the tested doses. Treatment with Kanakasava significantly (P<0.01) reversed elevated levels of IgE, cytokines, nitrites and influx of eosinophils and neutrophils in blood and BALF. These findings were further supported by the significant improvement in lung functions (P<0.01) and suppression (P<0.01) of degranulation of mast cells.
