The figure includes £51m in revenue for British manufacturers from the 3.7m cycles sold in 2010 – a rise of 28% on 2009.</p><p>The gross cycling contribution of £2.9bn for the economy takes into account factors such as bicycle manufacturing, cycle and accessory retail and cycle-related employment.</p><p>Commissioned by the broadcaster <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20120526000446/http://www.goskyride.com/" title="">Sky</a> and <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20120526000446/http://www.britishcycling.org.uk/" title="">British Cycling</a>, the report said every cyclist in the UK has a "gross cycling product" of £233 annually.</p><p>Employing around 23,000 people, the UK cycling sector made a £500m employment contribution in 2010, including more than £100m in income tax and National Insurance contributions last year, the report said. A total of 208m cycle journeys were made in 2010, with a net addition of 1.3m more cyclists taking to their bikes compared to the previous year, bringing the total to 13m.</p><p>Of these new cyclists, half a million are now cycling regularly. New cyclists alone contributed £685m to the UK economy, with existing regular cyclists representing a total market value of £635m. The report also showed that regular cyclists take 7.4 sick days per year, compared with 8.7 sick days for non-cyclists.</p><p>It added that a 20% increase in cycling by 2015 would save the economy £207m in reduced traffic congestion, £71m in lower pollution levels and £52m in NHS costs.</p><p><a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20120526000446/http://www2.lse.ac.uk/researchAndExpertise/Experts/profile.aspx?KeyValue=a.grous@lse.ac.uk" title="">Dr Alexander Grous, of the LSE</a>, who conducted the research, said: "The good news is that structural, economic, social and health factors seem finally to have created a true step-change in the UK's cycling scene."</p><p>The transport minister, Theresa Villiers, said: "The government is committed to encouraging cycling as a healthy and enjoyable way of getting around. The scope of the study will have been defined as such so is always likely to be very pro cycling. </p><p>On the headline points, it looks very misleading. </p><p>Cycling adds to the economy...interesting but probably not correct. Cycling most definitely accounts for sales of cycles, accessories etc but as you tend to see an upsurge in cycling when money's tight, it suggests that they're diverting resources from elsewhere (e.g. they're not spending money on petrol, train tickets, bus passes)....the net effect, at a macro level is probably not a positive one (do any rule of thumb survey on here and one of the key positives to cycling is it saves you cash). At best, it frees up cash for people to spend on other stuff so distributes money around the economy rather than feeding a few train companies or oil companies (and complex multiplier effect calculations could then prove that the distributed money maybe got spent more than it would be Shell, for example). </p><p>The other key thing is the mention of sickdays. No doubt cycling is healthier than not but saying the average worker takes more time off sick then a portion of the population that is likely to be skewed more towards younger, more active people (regardless of their commuting modes) is a bit wrong. </p><p>What's the sick days for cycling vs the sick days for similarly active individuals that happen to drive to work? </p><p>I'm not sure surveys like this are a good thing. <div class="comment-body"> <p>If buying and cherishing bicycles bestows such joy on citizen and country alike, why are only 2% of journeys made by bike, less than a tenth of some neighbouring countries?</p><p>The answer was neatly expressed by the yellow clad mother with cubs of whom I tentatively asked during one of those bubble wrapped Skyrides if such events would encourage her family to cycle more regularly. "Good Lord no", she replied, "I never let my children cycle when there are cars about".</p><p>Such widespread fear of traffic is well known to be the single biggest barrier to new cyclists, yet the report's authors resort to prescribing more bike paths, funded presumably by recycling some of that hypothetical Â£3bn, in order to make cycling more "normal".</p><p>But why invest in infrastructure if people are too scared to ride? A more effective approach might be to change drivers' attitudes towards their more vulnerable brethren. I know there are quite a few people out there that own multiple bikes, but I also know many who stick with the same steed year in-year out. According to DoT stats, there's one cyclist fatality for every two million miles cycled in the UK. I'm a very keen cyclist, I ride about 10000 miles per year. Even at that level, I could ride for a hundred years before I had an even chance of being killed. For the average commuter or recreational cyclist, the odds are very good indeed. And if they use lights when it's dark, avoid riding when drunk, and stay away from the nearside of large vehicles at intersections, their chances of getting killed while cycling are negligible. People, bikes and cars don't mix well, and should be kept separate. </p><p>We've just spent 50 years building so many roads for cars to use that, not surprisingly, using a car is easy. Except we now find that the rope that has been given to 'car use' has become so long it is strangling itself, and people are starting to look at others ways of getting to Point B. "Hey Ho! Here's an easy way, I'll use a bike!" </p><p>Next, along comes boffin Andrew Grous who puts a price on the change to two wheels. And standing in the background is Theresa Villiers, mouthing off a sound bite (I wonder when she last rode a bike?) as politicians do when they feel the need of some publicity.</p><p>I've heard and read it all hundreds of times before and not one iota of it changes the simple fact that people, bikes and cars don't mix well, and should be kept separate. Segregate them by building cycle lanes (pedestrians already have pavements and cars have roads) and Dr Grous's figures will increase exponentially. After all, when the M6 Preston By Pass was opened, no thought motorways would become quite as popular as they are, did they? </p><p>So here's a suggestion for the Government, one that will also help in the present economic mess by creating some much needed jobs. Build a few long distance, segregated cycle paths - and you literally will set the bicycle wheels rolling. Dr Grous has already proved they'll be cost effective, and they'll be a darned sight cheaper to build than any road, railway, port, airport or other transport infrastructure they plan to blight us with. And, after 50 years of building cycle paths, there will be a decided lack of sclerotic, fat and angry drivers yelling at cyclists. Half of them will be riding a bike and the other half will have died from heart failure. </p><p>Is this a pipe dream? (rolling eyes)<br>Just spent a week in the New Forest. Loads of gravel tracks, which were there anyway for timber extraction, are now signed and dedicated to cycling. They don't actually go anywhere though, next to useless for commuting, getting from place to place. They just keep the holidaymakers out of the way of local rat-race drivers and the holidaymakers are happy to cycle aimlessly around between the trees getting lost. <br>Meanwhile, in nearby suburban areas, old pavements in quiet bungalow-lined streets have garish reflective blue and white signs clamped to every other lamp post announcing symbolically that pedestrians (of whom there are few) must walk shoulder to shoulder with cyclists (of whom there are still fewer). This explains a lot of the inexperienced cyclists on the road today picking cycling up after a long break who cycle so atrociously. It also explains a lot of drivers attitudes in that they don't take cycling seriously as transport due to the connotations of childishness.</p><blockquote><p>Secondly rules covering cyclists are in the highway code and are tested for during a driving test , which these days is not one test of series of tests.</p></blockquote><p>I don't think for a second that a couple of questions in a test is the same as learning to cycle properly.
