The term conveys a sense of order, preparation, and readiness, whether for worship, battle, or ceremonial purposes.

Clothing and Adornment

The concept of array in terms of clothing is frequently mentioned in the Bible, often highlighting the splendor and dignity associated with certain garments. In the Old Testament, the priests' garments are described in detail, emphasizing their sacred purpose and the honor they bestow upon the wearer. For instance, Exodus 28:2 states, "Make holy garments for your brother Aaron, to give him glory and splendor." The array of the priestly garments signifies the sanctity and the divine calling of the priesthood.

In the New Testament, the idea of array is also used metaphorically to describe spiritual readiness and the virtues that believers are to "put on." Colossians 3:12 exhorts believers, "Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with hearts of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience." Here, the array is not of physical garments but of spiritual qualities that reflect a life transformed by Christ.

Military Formation

Array is also used in the context of military formation, denoting the organization and readiness of troops for battle. In 1 Samuel 17:8 , Goliath challenges the Israelites, saying, "Why do you come out and line up for battle?" The term "line up" reflects the array of the army, prepared and organized for combat. This imagery is prevalent throughout the Old Testament, where battles and military campaigns are described with attention to the arrangement and strategy of the forces involved.

The spiritual application of this concept is found in the New Testament, where believers are called to be spiritually arrayed for battle against the forces of evil. Ephesians 6:11 instructs, "Put on the full armor of God, so that you can make your stand against the devil’s schemes." The array here is a metaphor for spiritual preparedness, emphasizing the need for vigilance and the protection provided by God's armor.

Ceremonial and Festive Contexts

Array is also associated with ceremonial and festive occasions, where it denotes the splendor and beauty of the setting or participants. In Esther 1:6 , the opulence of King Xerxes' palace is described: "Hangings of white and blue linen fastened with cords of fine purple linen to silver rings on marble pillars, gold and silver couches on a mosaic pavement of porphyry, marble, mother-of-pearl, and other costly stones." The array of the decorations underscores the grandeur and magnificence of the royal celebration.

Similarly, the array of the bride in Revelation 19:8 symbolizes the purity and righteousness of the church: "She was given clothing of fine linen, bright and pure." This imagery highlights the beauty and holiness of the church as the bride of Christ, adorned for the marriage supper of the Lamb.

In summary, the term "array" in the Bible encompasses a range of meanings, from the literal arrangement of garments and military formations to the metaphorical adornment of spiritual virtues and readiness. It reflects themes of order, preparation, and the splendor associated with divine service and spiritual warfare.
Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary
1.
